Öhlins launches its new SmartEC3 semi-active suspension that debuts on the 2024 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP

Öhlins has worked hard to be able to offer the third generation of its Öhlins Racing semi-active suspension, its new SmartEC3. And what better than to debut it in one of the most representative high-performance sports models on the market, the Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP 2024.

The latter was presented on the occasion of the last EICMA 2023 and with it all those evolutions that the brand has included for this season. Among them is the arrival of Öhlins’ latest innovation in semi-active suspensions, the SmartEC3which convert this CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP in a mount even more efficient than its predecessor.

Öhlins SmartEC3 in detail

The new Öhlins suspension combines the brand’s latest world-class components with highly advanced electronic controls that continually optimize damping characteristics based on the behavior of the bike and the rider along with other determining factors.

The system also allows the user to choose, on the fly, between four driving modes with this semi-active suspension: Sport, Track, Rain and Manual: In this way, changing conditions and/or preferences can be addressed at all times, without losing an ounce of effectiveness.

The system includes the interface OBTi (Objective Base Tuning Interface) of the latest generation from Öhlins, which allows riders to easily adjust to the different characteristics of the motorcycle. This includes determining factors such as braking, weight transfers or initial acceleration.

In this way, and taking advantage of this technology, derived directly from MotoGP, the semi-active suspension Ohlins SmartEC3 Its operation is based on the precise adjustments derived directly from the information offered by the algorithms, which in turn work in coordination with the ECU.

Thus the pilot can select the driving mode that best suits him at any given moment, thanks to having a fork Öhlins S-EC3 (SV) NPX USD 43mm in the front and a rear shock absorber TTX36EC. Both elements have an exclusive design.

The system they use, unlike a traditional needle valve, has a pressure compensation chamber that balances the force applied to the shock absorber actuator, allowing for faster adjustment. The valve also provides greater sensitivity and responsiveness in any situation.
