At the end of last year we already told you what it could be like when a new Triumph “three and a half” range, fruit of a change in current Indian legislation. This tax reform de facto forces us to reduce the displacement of some models of the brands sold in the country, in order to qualify for a lower tax rate. In short, this new regulation is encompassed in two sections:
- Motorcycles less than 350 cc on which the GST tax rate will increase from 28% to 18%.
- Motorcycles over 350 cc where the tax rate will become 40%.
New Triumph “three and a half” range: What we know
Bajaj Auto has been in charge of announcing the launch of the new Triumph “three and a half” range on the local channel CNBC. Specifically, its general director and executive director, Rajiv Bajaj, who has confirmed that it will be starting next April when its marketing will begin in the country’s official dealers.
Until now, the British firm’s models were powered by a single-cylinder engine called TR internally, referring to Triumph’s historical ‘Trophy’ nomenclature. This has 398 cc, a displacement that is not viable for the marketing of this type of motorcycle under the new GST 2.0 tax regulations. That is why Bajaj has been working for months to reduce the displacement to 350 cc or less. To do this, they must reduce the stroke or diameter of their total dimensions.
After this drastic change, it is obvious that the brand will conveniently update the rest of the engine. The idea is to maintain features as similar as possible to those offered so far by this mechanic. Let us remember that currently this engine offers up to 42 HP at 9,000 rpm and 37.5 Nm of maximum torque in the recent Thruxton 400 2026. If its displacement is reduced, it is almost inevitable that the power and maximum torque figures will also do so.
Having said all this, the new Triumph “three and a half” range, initially, would be intended for the Indian market. It is not clear that these changes will apply to the models that are included within it in other countries where it is marketed.
In any case, it will not be until a few weeks when all the data regarding this change of magnitude within the current offer of the British brand will be revealed.
