The “M” suffix has been associated with BMW motorsport since the 1980s, first reserved for cars and relatively recently transferred to motorcycles: today the M 1000 RR, the M 1000 R and the M 1000 XR form the sporting pinnacle of Munich. But there was a fourth name reserved since 2019 that had never materialized: M 1300 GS. The brand then secured the rights to the name, and we already told you how rumors about its launch had been gaining strength for some time without official confirmation.
The rumor about the launch of a new M 1300 GS is loud again
That wait could be coming to an end. The motorrad-magazin.at photographer has not captured images of the motorcycle rolling, but has captured images of the testing of a prototype transported under a camouflage tarp, a detail that in the world of erlkönig says a lot: when a prototype is covered with that level of secrecy (and not simply lacks lettering or finishes, as happens in very early stages of development) it usually means that development is very advanced.
A GS designed for mud, not for asphalt
Unlike the HP that BMW offered on the previous R 1250 GS – essentially a cosmetic package on the standard base – everything indicates that the M 1300 GS will be a much more in-depth revision. And the first test is in the running gear: the captured prototype mounts 21-inch wheels at the front and 18 at the rear, the same off-road philosophy that we already saw on the R 12 G/S, shod with Metzeler Karoo tires. Added to this is greater suspension travel and a reinforced and redesigned mounting for the cardan swingarm.
The BMW R 12 G/S GS Trophy Competition arrives prepared “to the teeth” for off-road
The M brakes, with greater braking capacity and with their characteristic blue color, can also be clearly seen. And in a revealing gesture, the tank appears to be the standard one of the R 1300 GS and not the expanded one of the R 1300 GS Adventure, a coherent decision if the objective is to save weight and improve mass distribution before autonomy.
The engine, the great silent protagonist
This is where it is advisable to be cautious with the figures. According to the Austrian media, the 1,300 cc water-cooled twin-cylinder boxer would hardly undergo substantial changes: the 149 Nm of torque of the R 1300 GS is already considered more than enough, and although there is speculation of “some more horsepower” over the current 145 HP, it would not be strictly necessary. The reason: if BMW manages to lighten the assembly – using materials such as titanium in the exhaust – the engine itself will have less mass to move, which in practical terms is equivalent to more performance without touching a single power figure.
A new R 1350 GS could be on the way, and BMW’s new 2027 range confirms this theory
It is an approach that we already know from other “M” models from the house: the M 1000 And this information, for now, remains speculative until BMW officially confirms it.
Aesthetics to be confirmed, clear positioning

On the visual plane, a new seat unit and “very likely” a revised rear subframe are assumed. The possible disappearance of the front and rear radar units is also pointed out, consistent again with the search for minimum weight.
Razgatlioglu dares everything: now he stunts with a BMW M 1000 RR
The role that the M 1300 GS will play within the family also seems clear: not just another travel GS, but the sporting spearhead capable of standing up to any terrain, reflexively elevating the image of the entire GS 2027 range — a range that, as we already said, could also be preparing a future R 1350 GS in the longer term.
The price, the great unknown

In terms of commercial positioning, everything indicates that the M 1300 GS will play the role of boxer flagship, with smaller circulations but greater margin for BMW. As a guideline, the M 1000
When will it arrive
The Austrian source places a possible restyling of the standard R 1300 GS as early as next autumn – also visible in the testing photos – while the definitive M 1300 GS could be presented before the start of the 2027 season.
