This is how the new 400 cc bikes are changing the rules of the game

As we are seeing, medium-displacement motorcycles are no longer passing motorcycles. For decades, the path seemed perfectly defined and established. First, start with a small motorcycle, gain experience over time and, sooner or later, increase the displacement. «More displacement meant more power, more performance and, in theory, a better motorcycle.«. But that logic, today, “starts to lose strength«.

As we are telling you, the current 300, 400 and 500 cc motorcycles have little to do with the small displacement motorcycles of 15 or 20 years ago. Now, as we all know, they can include electronic throttle, ABS, traction control, TFT screens, connectivity, navigation, quality suspension and engines capable of offering more than enough performance for everyday use. And all this without the need to resort to huge motors.

The latest data from India serve to put figures to this transformation. According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), sales of 2-wheelers in the Indian market reached 1,923 million units in July 2026, 22.6% more than in the same month of the previous year. But the interesting thing is not only how much the market is growing, but also where the supply is evolving.

A 400 cc motorcycle can be much more than it seems

As we are telling you, the current generation of medium-displacement motorcycles has achieved something important: they stop looking like transitional motorcycles. A good example are the Triumph 400. Its 398 cc engine develops 40 hp and 37.5 Nm. And its equipment includes electronic throttle, ABS, 43 mm inverted fork and a quality braking system. All this with a curb weight of only 170 kg.

Not too long ago, a motorcycle with such a level of equipment and chassis part would have had to increase its displacement considerably.

And it is not an isolated case. The 400 and 450 cc platforms are multiplying, with single-cylinder and twin-cylinder engines capable of offering cruising speeds perfectly suitable for the road, as well as a response strong enough to enjoy a curvy road. Displacement, therefore, no longer tells the whole story.

The A2 argument makes even more sense

This evolution has a particularly interesting reading in Spain. The A2 license allows you to drive motorcycles of up to 35 kW, about 47 hp, as long as they also meet the established requirements regarding original power and power/weight ratio. And this is where the new generation of 300, 400 and 500 cc fits perfectly.

For years, many motorcyclists have understood the A2 as a mandatory stage before obtaining the A permit and accessing a larger displacement motorcycle. But what if it was no longer necessary? A modern 400 can be light enough for daily use, have power for traveling, have advanced electronics and offer a chassis capable of taking advantage of it on the road. For many users, there is no real need to replace it with a 700, 900 or 1,000 cc. In fact, staying in A2 can become a decision and not a limitation.

More displacement also means more bike to maintain

The “economic argument also has a lot of weight.” A larger displacement motorcycle usually implies a higher purchase price and, depending on the model, higher costs associated with insurance, tires, fuel and maintenance. But there is also a practical issue.

A 170 or 180 kg motorcycle is much easier to move when stationary than a 230 or 250 kg machine. It is more manageable in the city, requires less effort and can be more accessible for daily use. And if, in addition, it offers 40 or 45 hp, a maximum speed sufficient for any legal road and equipment that a few years ago was reserved for much more expensive motorcycles, the question begins to become inevitable:What real need is there to increase displacement??

Asia has been showing for years that it works

India is one of the markets where this trend is most evident, but it is not a phenomenon exclusive to that country. In many Asian markets, medium-displacement motorcycles have been serving as “do-it-all vehicles” for years. They are used to commute to work, travel, enjoy the weekend or explore mountain roads. And, as we are telling you, the industry has learned from that demand and is transferring a good part of that philosophy to other markets.

Now, Indian, Chinese, Japanese and European manufacturers are developing increasingly sophisticated platforms around 300, 400 and 500 cc. And the competition is making these motorcycles better and better. And, that, obviously, directly benefits the motorcyclist. Because more competition means better engines, better components, more technology and more careful designs, and all without the need to continually increase displacement.

Big bikes have to offer more

This does not mean that 700, 900 or 1,000 cc motorcycles have stopped making sense. Not at all. A large displacement continues to offer obvious advantages when traveling with a passenger and luggage, traveling long distances on the highway or simply looking for performance that a 400 cannot provide. The problem is that nowThose advantages have to be much clearer«.

Years ago it was enough to say that a motorcycle had more cc and more power. Today that is no longer enough. If a 400 weighs little, it has a good cycle, electronics, connectivity, consumes little, costs much less and offers sufficient features for the use made by most motorcyclists.

The 900 parked next to it has to explain what exactly that extra provides. And perhaps, that is the great transformation that the market is experiencing. The question is no longer necessarilywhat will be my next motorcycle?». For more and more bikers, it can be a much simpler question: “What?why do I need a bigger one

The A2 may no longer be an intermediate step

The evolution of medium-displacement motorcycles is changing an idea that seemed immovable. A 400 or a 500 no longer has to be the motorcycle you buy while you wait to get a bigger one. Now, it could perfectly be the bike you decide to keep. As we will never tire of repeating.

And for a biker who does not need to travel constantly with a passenger and luggage, who uses the motorcycle daily and especially enjoys curved roads, a light motorcycle, with power within the limits of the A2 license and well equipped can offer practically everything you need. The industry still has great reasons to sell big bikes, but it’s increasingly having to work a little harder to explain why you need one. That’s clear.
