Bagnaia is one of those drivers that we can consider almost old school. He is a gentleman, a fast guy who does not forgive on the track when things are going well, who has two MotoGP titles under his arm and another Moto2 title and, above all, we repeat: he is a gentleman.
So much so that even when the title was being played against Martín in 2024, he did not want to get into strange stories even though the team reminded him that he had to be more mischievous. What’s more, he was the first to congratulate Jorge Martín. Bagnaia is, in many ways, a driver who no longer exists.
And another example of this is that it is one of the most committed in terms of security. In fact, in the so-called MotoGP Safety Commission, he is one of the few riders who always attends and also one of the most critical in this matter. In Australia he has demonstrated it again by stating that the union between pilots is essential.
As we have already mentioned, this weekend during the Australian GP the drivers had met to talk about the future of the Qatar GP. And that for Bagnaia is something important, it is a first step that reinforces the idea that the driver has about the unity of the grid and a possible association between the drivers.
According to Bagnaia’s words, it seems that yesterday there was more than a meeting to discuss Qatar
In fact, according to Pecco’s own words, yesterday was more than just a meeting about Qatar, but progress has begun in the creation of this association, as stated by GPOne colleagues:
“I think that unity and an association of pilots is something important. We had started to address this issue in 2023, but then, due to force majeure, we were unable to continue. It was the right time to take it up again. I think it is important to protect ourselves more and have more say in certain decisions. Now all that remains is to find a person to represent us. Maybe it would also be better if it were someone outside of this world, without preferences and who works only in one direction, for safety and for us.”
In his words and when asked if an agreement had been reached, Bagnaia acknowledged that it had, although he could not say anything about it. What he has made clear is that, as Marc Márquez confirmed, there will be more meetings and that he considers that they will have to continue along this line: “When something is needed, we come together; when everything is going well, no. In any case, I believe that everything works and that we must continue in our line. In the end we are all pilots, but we are also intelligent people and, obviously, there is a part of us that tends to think about its own interest. However, when it is spoken and there is a majority, we must not go against it. We have to be united and go to the end.”
Obviously nothing is closed, but for some time now many riders have been uncomfortable with the path the championship is taking and although equalizing forces will never be possible, it is evident that in this way they would be able to have more voice and, perhaps, more vote in a MotoGP that is growing without taking them into account.
