In recent days, we have learned about one of the patents related to the next generation of BMW Motorrad sports motorcycles. It details the details surrounding one of the key pieces in the development of its future Hi-Sport models. We are talking about the swingarm that will be part of the technical configuration of their new motorcycles. A piece that appears even lighter than those used by the brand until now.
A swingarm identical to the one mounted on the Concept RR
Last year 2025, specifically in the month of May, BMW officially presented its most radical motorcycle to date: the spectacular Concept RR. Markus FlaschDirector of BMW Motorrad, said then about her: “Never before has BMW Motorrad provided such an early glimpse of the future generation of RR models.”
“The BMW Motorrad Concept RR is a true masterpiece from our development team, both technically and in terms of design language.” Inspired by the M 1000 RR, with which factory rider Toprak Razgatlioglu was able to easily win the WorldSBK in 2024, “The Concept RR offers a true whirlwind of emotions for both street and track use,” andFlasch explained.
He concluded by referring to a determining fact in the development of a motorcycle with these characteristics: “The move from racing to the road has never been so clearly shown. It represents BMW Motorrad’s intention to offer the highest level of engineering and maximum performance in this segment.” The patent presented by the brand with the newly made swingarm as the protagonist is based precisely on this last aspect.
Less weight: same rigidity and resistance
In a range of sports motorcycles such as those represented by the BMW Motorrad 1000RR acronym, it is essential to have components of the level shown by the new swingarm patented by the brand. Let’s think for a moment about the benefits that the new generation of German superbikes are capable of offering. Let us remember that the water-cooled four-cylinder in-line engine based on the motorcycle with which the brand faces the FIM Superbike World Championship, delivers more than 230 HP (169 kW).
Starting from this level of demand, the patent for the new swingarm shows us “a much more closed design than the current swingarm of the S1000RR/M1000RR”as reported by AMCN colleagues. As detailed in the documentation provided along with the design sketches, this piece is manufactured through a recasting process, electromagnetically kneading the metal until it reaches a semi-solid state.
After this initial process, the swingarm would be left with a “texture similar to that of cold ice cream”. Subsequently, and using a mold, we move on to the pressing phase. At this point they comment from the Australian media: “The advantage is that this process allows the use of especially thin walls, less than 3.5 mm thick, while maintaining the desired rigidity and resistance.” Focusing on the details of the design itself we can see that the swingarm is manufactured from two main castings.
These, in turn, “They feature strategically placed reinforcing ribs on their internal surfaces and are welded together to form the main structure of the swingarm”they conclude. After carrying out the previous steps in the manufacturing process, additional panels are welded inside the swingarm, with the intention of covering the panel formed by the aforementioned ribs.
Updates could arrive in 2027
Although BMW Motorrad has already revealed the modifications for 2027 around its M1000RR and S1000RR, everything indicates that the new swingarm could reach this model range in the coming months. Likewise, the brand is working on finalizing the details that will make up some of its most anticipated new features and of which we have discussed the main updates throughout its development.
On the one hand, it is confirmed that BMW is working on a new mid-range GS, as well as the M 1000 RS, “a 218 HP Sport-Touring for traveling very quickly.” All this without forgetting the BMW R20, the enormous naked with a 2,000 cc boxer engine, or the elitist BMW Vision K18, presented to the public for the first time in the exclusive setting of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, on Lake Como.
