It had been years since we had heard from any of the only 50 copies limited edition Tornado S-1 that Yoshimura launched on the market at the beginning of this century. Now we not only have the opportunity to remember again the exclusivity of this incredible preparation; It is also possible to get unit number 21, recently put up for sale on a well-known international portal. Of course, after payment of the $40,000 that they are asking for her.
Yoshimura Tornado S-1: “Hi-Sport” exoticism
Any of the preparations that have come out of Yoshimura’s facilities to date undoubtedly deserve a place in the history of two wheels. You just have to take a look, for example, at one of their latest creations, a spectacular 1986 Suzuki GSX-R750 which its creators named at the time. “Complete Machine #604”. A project included in its serial Heritage and that pays tribute to the golden years of Japanese superbikes.
Almost a quarter of a century before this launch, it did the same with what at that time was one of the superbike references of the moment: the GSX-R1000 K1. The final result of a commendable preparation process resulted in this Tornado S-1. With only 50 copies manufactured at a rate of 3,780,000 yenabout 20,600 euros at the current exchange rate, it was not even necessary to put them up for sale, since all of them were reserved long before being assembled.
More power, less weight, maximum efficiency
The idea of what the Tornado S-1 should represent was clear: maximum performance without losing an iota of reliability. In addition, its complete body kit would be responsible for giving it an exclusive aesthetic along with improved aerodynamics. Among the modifications to which the model was subjected, a thorough revision of the mechanical part stood out, including, among others:
- ST-1 camshaft set
- SUS valve spring
- Cyclone Tri-Oval 4-1 Titanium Exhaust
- Revised oil pan with increased oil capacity by 300 cc
- Lowered cylinder head and increased compression to 13.2:1, etc.
With these changes, the Tornado S-1 managed to increase its rotation speed by 500 rpm, now offering a maximum power of 170 HP (125 kW) at 12,000 rpm and 107.9 Nm of torque at 10,000 rpm. Additionally, the original electronic engine management system was replaced with a unit Yoshimura EMS tailored, controllable via a handlebar-mounted three-position switch that allowed the rider to toggle between different fuel maps and on-the-go ignition, an advanced feature for the time.
But that’s not all, as a clutchless quickshifter was installed, along with a dash-mounted shift timing light. All this was accompanied by a chassis equipped with Öhlins suspension, revised brakes with Nissin components, BBS wheels and a carbon fiber body.
The fuel tank, with up to 24 liters of capacity and a filler cap with the Yoshimura Racing logo, was made entirely of aluminum. At the time there was talk of a weight of barely 160 kilograms drywith a final weight-power ratio close to 1:1 kg/CV. In short, we were looking at “La Deportiva” of the moment, although both its price and the small number of units manufactured soon made it disappear from the media spotlights of the moment.
