A not very common one Ducati 900 SD Darmah It is currently for sale on the bidding portal of the friends of Iconic Motorbikes. This, like so many other mounts sold by the Californian specialist, is one of those units that no one ever dared to pilot. In fact, it only has three miles on its odometer, although we assume that these are the result of moving it from one place to another for the sole purpose of storing it.
Or, as is the case of its current owner, displaying it in his office. Since you don’t walk around in it, it serves as a decorative element and even as a coat rack… Who knows. In any case, since here everyone is free to do with what they really want with their own thing, let’s focus on what is being sold, its condition and what is special about this version.
Ducati 900 SD Darmah: A little history.
As detailed by Iconic, after the commercialization of the well-known 750GT from the 70s, Ducati sought to evolve with a simpler engine. The result was the first twin-cylinder engine with a square crankcase and conical gears, commercially called 860 GT. It was years later when the Borgo Panigale firm decided to launch this 900 SD Darmah on the market, which essentially presented a series of substantial improvements in its equipment.
Marketed between 1977 and 1982, the 900 SD Darmah was equipped with the best components of the time such as Brembo brakes, Speedline magnesium wheels, a double seat with more padding, Bosch ignition, Silentium exhaust, electric starter as standard and Marzocchi suspension.
In the mechanical section, its 864 cc 90-degree V-twin declared a maximum power of 51 HP at 7,200 rpm and a torque of 52.8 Nm at 6,000 revolutionsmanaging to reach a top speed of 196 km/h.
As for the 900 SD Darmah that is for sale, it was manufactured in June 1979, and is associated with the VIN: 950481 and engine number: 903969. The current owner purchased it two years ago in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Since then the motorcycle has been displayed in his office. As detailed, in relation to current status “no maintenance has been carried out and the original lead seal remains intact.”
The seller further specifies: “The front brake does not work. It has the original battery installed, which is presumed discharged. It has never been refueled or started. The pistons and crankshaft rotate freely when manually turning the rear wheel.” The bike is completely original, to the point that it still equips the Pirelli Gordons with which it was first sold more than four decades ago.
A negative fact, beyond some apparent rust, is that both rearview mirrors are missing. Of course, the sale includes six keys: two for the ignition, two for the fork lock and two for the rear compartment. On the contrary, it does not include the owner’s manual or tool kit.
