Most modern cars come standard with things like rear view cameras or Bluetooth… but surprisingly not all have rear window wipers. The GeckoWiper is a device that provides this component to cars that do not have them. For now the Hyundai Ioniq 5, but they assure that other brands and models will soon follow.
The GeckoWiper, weighing one kg, was invented by Swiss engineer (and Ioniq 5 owner) Robert Bleischwitz. As with us in our test, he was quite frustrated by the fact that his car did not have a rear window wiper.
The device works with a battery, is fixed to the bottom/exterior part of the window using a suction cup (manually operated) and a integrated magnet which is attracted to another magnet placed inside the bezel. It is activated with a two-second press or double-click on a wireless remote control, which can be connected to the Hyundai’s dashboard speaker. The GeckoWiper makes two passes within a five second period, after which it will return to standby mode.
Its creator assures that one battery charge is enough for about six months on standby…and yes, its electronic components are completely waterproof.
Bleischwitz says several users tested the beta version of the GeckoWiper over two years, in “a wide range of conditions, including hot and cold temperatures, dry and humid environments, storms, and high-speed highways.” It already works on solutions for models from brands such as Tesla, Polestar, Genesis and Kia.
The GeckoWiper will not work in all cases, since factors such as the size of the arm or brush, angle, compression force and position of the magnet influence it. All of these variables are different depending on the vehicle model.
The first units for the Hyundai Ioniq 5 will cost 309 Swiss francs (330 euros to the current change) and, if you want to know if your car without a rear window wiper is compatible, the least thing you can do is register on their website to receive updates. Not before, of course, seeing the device in action in this video:
