In preparations for the launch of the OS-Base AdventureKriega’s design team discussed what motorcycle would be the ideal for photographing for packaging. Being a base without universal adjustment frame, created to adapt to all shapes, sizes and ages of adventure motorcycles, the team did not seem appropriate to use a current ADV model, and some of the oldest adventure motorcycles are not are striking enough for them to stand out in an exhibitor.
Finally, they decided on a personalized adventure motorcycle, and also had a very striking copy of the Swedish photographer Gorm Taube, collaborator of the brand for a long time. From Kriega they explain: “We had closely followed the evolution of its NX650 project motorcycle, based on the model that we called Honda Dominator in the United Kingdom, and it was time to know more about it.”
Honda Nx650 Rally with Kriega OS-Base Adventure accessories in detail (interview with the owner)
Kriega: When did you buy the sling?
I bought the NX650 RD08 of 2001 in Stockholm in 2015, where many years had passed as a true daily motorcycle. At first it was only going to be a practical motorcycle for day to day, along with my project motorcycle then, an Sr500 Yamaha that is still hidden under a canvas in a garage corner. The NX was equipped with a large trunk, a large rear light and striking graphics, so it was not precisely pretty, but the motorcycle itself was solid. It had a few kilometers and nothing that scared under the plastics.
What attracted you to this motorcycle, among the thousands of options?
It all started with a personalized motorcycle that caught my attention, the Kiddo one of the Spanish company Kiddo Motors. When investigating the original model they used, I realized that these motorcycles were quite common here and considered themselves a bit like the ugly duckling. With the appropriate modifications, they could shine. It is not striking, but gives the feeling of being built to go anywhere without complications, and that is what hooked me.
When did you start designing your own pieces for her, instead of limiting yourself to installing screwed accessories, and why?
I started doing it after returning to Sweden in 2019. I wanted to get more out of the motorcycle, but most of the pieces I found or did not like or did not do what I needed. At that time, the accessory market offer was mainly limited to trunks and universal items, so I started to manufacture my own. In part it was out of necessity and partly out of curiosity, to see how far I could go.
Luggage anchors were one of the first projects. They were simple, but they solved a big problem when I wanted to travel with team. Then came the protective plate and the players, and then everything was growing to become more personalized pieces.
What was the most complicated part to design?
The Tower Rally is the most complex and ambitious project so far. The large number of pieces and screws necessary to work was a project in itself. To that we must add the innumerable hours dedicated to making small adjustments so that it will be well placed, compact and firm without losing functionality. Nothing is ever done from a purely functional or aesthetic point of view. It is about balance and maximize both aspects, which requires much more effort and time. Doing something very functional or purely aesthetic can be easy, but combining both aspects is where the real challenge is.
What is your favorite screwed piece and your favorite component of Gorm Moto?
It may not be a screwed piece itself, but for me they are the wheels. Changing the OEM tires on Excel tires with a 19 -inch striker really balanced the motorcycle and makes it much more pleasant to drive and with a much better appearance (the NX650 has a 21 -inch series striker). As for my own pieces, it may be small as the back disc protector. I love when small details fit and make the whole look perfect.
Do you sell more or less GORT Moto Nx650 pieces than you expected?
More. I thought that this motorcycle was too specific to interest someone, but it turns out that there is a whole community of NX pilots who want the same improvements as me. It has been great to see how pieces are sent to every corner of the world. “I do what I need” has always been my motivation. That maintains the high quality and focuses my energy on the pieces that I really want for me.
Could you explain the important modifications that you have not described yet?
It has a long -range reservoir Acerbis, a reconstructed engine with a larger carburetor and escape. The suspension has been improved both in front and behind, and the cabin has been renewed with a Motogadget indicator, switches, M-Unit Blue as an electronics nucleus and a fully personalized cable deck to support everything. Then there are all the practical elements, such as the clipination, protective plate, personalized covers and supports for luggage.
What has been your favorite tour with her?
The motorcycle is prepared to travel, but in recent years we have focused more on the family, so we have not yet made any long trip with it in its current state. Luckily, there are many gravel roads a few kilometers from my house. Forests, lakes and quiet paths where you don’t see anyone for hours. That’s where the motorcycle feels more comfortable.
The longest trip I have done with her was until Milan, and did not fail at any time. The only thing that “broke” was a screw of the escape protector, which was lost somewhere in the Alps. I keep dreaming of traveling Scandinavia and getting to Iceland. A trip without highways, only injured paths and wild camping until losing the notion of time.
What is next?
Now it is quite well organized. I will continue to perfect some things for comfort in long trips, but the big changes are already made. However, small details continue to make a big difference. Currently, I am building another NX with a more street -oriented approach, and some of the pieces are also evidence. If they work well, they could end in the rally.
Do you think you will keep it forever or do you need to sell motorcycles to have space for the next project?
This is left. Over the years I have sold motorcycles, but the NX has become something more personal. It is always the motorcycle to which I return and with which I want to ride. I have a problem with creating sentimental links with my motorcycles, and the idea of selling them is always a bit strange. My Ducati SCR is currently on sale, but I have feelings found in this regard.
What do you think have been used in Kriega’s packaging?
It is a surreal sensation, but in the best sense. I already used Kriega products long before the company knew who I was. Seeing my motorcycle now in your packaging is like closing the circle.
Anything else to add?
Only this motorcycle has given me more than I ever thought. It began as a means of transport to go to work and became the motorcycle that shapes much of my design work, my way of driving and even the people I have met along the way.
