KYMCO Spain achieves the ‘Calculate and Reduce’ seal: it reduces its emissions by 8.06% despite the impact of transportation

KYMCO Spain (Human Mobility), has taken a new step in its voluntary carbon footprint measurement strategy, started in 2019 and unique in the two-wheeled sector. The company has obtained the official seal for the first time ‘I calculate and reduce’ of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.

This official recognition certifies that KYMCO not only measures its emissions, but that it has achieved the reduction criteria established by the Ministry. Specifically, KYMCO has reduced the average intensity of its emissions by 8.06% in the period 2022-2024 compared to the previous three-year period (2021-2023).

KYMCO “moves in the right direction”

With this data, KYMCO becomes part of a particularly small group within the Ministry’s Carbon Footprint Registry. Of the 21,143 fingerprints registered as of September 2026, only 522 have ‘Calculation and Reduction’ and Scope 1+2 and 3. Of them, only 136 are records of small and medium-sized companiesjust 0.64% of the total registered prints. Ernesto Kopresident of Human Mobility, commented:

“This seal is very important for us because it accredits the path we have been traveling in recent years and shows that we are moving in the right direction. But it also represents a new responsibility with ourselves and with society: to continue making decisions with sustainable criteria and to act especially where our greatest impact is concentrated, in transportation and logistics.”

KYMCO is a pioneer in the two-wheeled sector in Spain in certifying its carbon footprint under international standards ISO 14064-1 and register it with the Ministry. Since its inception, this strategy has maintained a particularly demanding approach by also incorporating indirect emissions (Scope 3).

The ministerial certificate contemplates, among other sources, emissions derived from upstream and downstream transportation and distribution, employee travel, business trips, capital goods and the extraction, production and distribution of certain purchased products and services. The registered perimeter includes the company’s import and marketing activity of motorcycles and spare parts.

2024: first full exercise with the maritime route diverted through Africa

Obtaining the ‘Reduzco’ seal is especially relevant because it includes the latest emissions record corresponding to the year 2024, the first full year in which imports of KYMCO Spain vehicles and spare parts from Asia were affected by the diversion of maritime routes around the Cape of Good Hope.

The diversion of routes caused by the Red Sea crisis significantly increased the distances traveled. In the case of imports from Kaohsiung (Taiwan), the maritime distance considered went from 17,616 kilometers in 2023 to 23,235 kilometers in 2024. In those from Shanghai (China), increased from 18,596 to 24,370 kilometers.

The impact of this scenario is especially significant for KYMCO Spain because transportation constitutes the main component of its carbon footprint. In 2024, indirect emissions associated with transportation reached 1,011.71 tons of CO₂ equivalent, close to 93% of a total footprint of 1,092.54 tons of CO₂ equivalent with a market approach.

The evolution compared to the base year 2019 allows us to observe the accumulated effect of this process: direct emissions have been reduced by 29.64%; indirect emissions associated with imported energy, 89.86% with a market approach; and indirect emissions caused by transportation, 4.86%.

“We have made very significant progress in areas in which we have direct decision-making capacity, but transportation and logistics today represent the majority of our footprint. That is where we have to continue working, even in scenarios in which external conditions are not in our favor”Ernesto Ko concluded.
