Martín’s fall on Saturday was a splash of cold water for the show, but then came the confirmation of an injury and the first question was: will he be in Sepang? After going through the circuit’s medical center it did not seem possible, but more complete extra tests confirmed that there was only a fracture of the distal radius of the right hand. Obviously, an injury never comes at a good time, but having it just when a triplet is going to be achieved and also in the first race is even more complicated.
But as far as possible, ruling out more fractures in the area and confirming that the fracture was not displaced and an operation was not necessary, opened a window for Martín to take to the track in Sepang. A window that carries with it a plan that the pilot and his physio Aitor Tomás already have in motion.
For now, this entire recovery plan to go out on the track in Sepang does not mean that Martín can race, because above how the rider feels will be the decision made by the MotoGP medical team to allow, or not, the Madrid native to get on the bike.
The process for Martín to take to the track in Sepang has several phases
Even so, if there is any chance that this could happen, go through an express plan designed for it. Already in Kuala Lumpur, where Martín arrived yesterday to begin a treatment initiated by a trusted physio, while Tomás will join today, Tuesday, in order to recover the affected area.
As Aitor explained to his colleagues at Motorsport.com: “What we will do is divide the process into two phases. The first will focus on reducing inflammation, and everything that the bone injury entails. What we will seek is to recover mobility, strength and functionality. And we will achieve that with cryotherapy and massage.”
This treatment in itself fails to improve the situation of a bone, for which magnetotherapy will be used. All this work will be prior to knowing if Jorge will be able to compete in Sepang, or will not receive the go-ahead. If so, the next phase will come in which infiltrations will be assessed, the effort will be focused on caring for the wrist, and there will even be a special glove from Alpinestars to prevent the closure from bothering you.
We will have to wait until Thursday to know if that approval comes or not and, if so, it will be on Friday when we will begin to see how far Martín can go in Sepang, a technical and physical track, especially complex for a type of injury like the one suffered by the Aprilia rider.
Now the question that remains in the air is whether or not a driver with a non-union fracture in his wrist is fit to compete based strictly on medical criteria, and not on the driver’s sporting situation. Because what is evident is that Jorge will try everything in his power to continue fighting for the title.
