We have recently learned, thanks to our Argentine colleagues at La Moto, the new updates that Yamaha seems to be planning for the current MT-03 and R3. Two models that have become a benchmark in the small-displacement naked and sports segment, thanks to their balanced approach.
Undoubtedly, the two-wheeled sector is advancing inexorably and Yamaha is first-hand aware of the current demands of the market. Perhaps for this reason it has requested the registration for Europe of a series of new internal names that would refer to its future range of models.
The next-generation Yamaha MT-03 and R3 are on the way
Under the internal codes RW125, RW155, RW250, RW350 and RW700 It is clear that Yamaha is planning some updates to its current offering. But as we can see, of all those mentioned, there is only one displacement that is currently not covered by any model of the Japanese firm: RW350.
In the patent description itself, the brand explains that “These will be units intended to be motorcycles, mopeds, three-wheeled motorcycles, three-wheeled mopeds, three-wheeled mopeds and parts and accessories for all of the aforementioned products.”
As we can see, there is little clarification about the brand’s future models, including the possibility of a new generation MT-03 and R3. In any case, following logic, only the initials RW350 are out of place in this description and make us think that the aforementioned MT-03 and R3 are destined to include some significant changes, including the arrival of a new engine.
Currently, both models come equipped with a twin-cylinder engine. 321 cc able to offer 42 HP of power at 10,750 rpm. Just as KTM has done with its new 390 Duke, increasing the displacement to 399 cc, Yamaha is likely to opt for a similar solution to substantially improve the performance of its MT-03 and R3. An engine that is around 350 cc and that will probably end up being close to the maximum power limit allowed for the current A2.
For now, the brand has not made any comments on this matter, so we will have to wait for further updates. What we do know is that it will use a new, more environmentally friendly steel, with low carbon content, in the packaging of its motorcycles for shipping.
