NOCO ISDE Galicia 2024: Special attention to the environment

The NOCO ISDE Galicia 2024 has a special Plan of measures to reduce inconvenience and impact in transit and link areas, some in environments of the Natura 2000 Network. With this plan, the organization aims to develop a set of specific actions and reinforcement to minimize potential environmental effects, which are added to those already planned for the entire test, and to those already established by the FIM for this type of Enduro. It is about preventing impacts in those sections that run in the surroundings of the Natura 2000 Network.

The main measure contemplated, and on which the rest of the actions that make up this Plan are articulated, is the exclusion of the roads and trails present within the Natura 2000 Network in sections of timed and/or scoring competition. In those connecting places, between different routes or competition areas, where it is not possible to choose connection alternatives, the protocols will require a considerable extension of the connection distances and permits to circulate on roads and other roads, in places of passage coinciding with Red Natura areas, only perfectly signposted connection points will be available.

They will be established and delimited specifically, with participants traveling only on open and regularly used forest tracks or roads. For these connection points, the organization will have the following measures:

  • Reduction of traffic speed that should not exceed 30 km/h.
  • Signage throughout the neutralized route link area.
  • Neutralized traffic cannot be carried out by more than 4 vehicles at the same time.
  • The presence of the organization’s personnel is established at the different points of these links, to verify compliance with the established special regulations.
  • Organization personnel will check the acoustic impact in these sections using sound level meter measurements.
  • Failure to comply with any of the preventive measures, in the environmental field, will be cause for direct exclusion from the test.

The test regulations also establish the necessary guidelines not to circulate in water currents. In some areas where ruts and erosion may be accentuated, the organization will enable erosion reduction areas and, in any case, comprehensive restoration of the areas eventually eliminated during the week immediately following the test; during which waste collection and management measures will be established, which, in any case, will be guaranteed with collection equipment, both in deposits and any flying debris that may result during the test.

This edition will be a before and after in this type of events in Galicia, since it will highlight the sustainability (economic, environmental and social) of this model of sports events. This way they can ensure that the parameters for minimizing environmental impact are met. The organization has professionals who will help ensure that the activities run exclusively on pre-existing tracks and circulation areas, and that the event is held in places and times that do not significantly interfere with natural life, opting for dates without affecting periods. of animal reproduction.

The objective is to minimize any impact on flora or fauna… and in the case of emissions, an auditable carbon footprint compensation program will be developed in the same areas. The test will also collaborate with NGOs in the organization of corporate environmental responsibility activities/dissemination days and actions to control invasive species.

Once the test is over, the organization will publish its emissions balances and Compensation Plan, which will have as its main resource destination the biodiversity recovery of mountain areas in central Galicia.
