The early hours of Tuesday to Wednesday left us with sad news. The musician Glen Hansard lost his life in a motorcycle accident near Dublin. The accident, in which no other vehicles were involved, resulted in the death of the singer-songwriter at the age of 56.
Although emergency services rushed to the scene of the accident, they could not do anything to save his life. Now, the Irish police have opened an investigation that seeks to clarify the facts and has requested the collaboration of witnesses and drivers who can provide images from their vehicle cameras.
Hansard leaves, however, a musical connection linked to Irish music and will also be remembered for his collaboration in the cinema, where he was part of The Swell Season and won the Oscar for Best Original Song for Falling Slowly, a song included in Once with Markéta Irglová.
Hansard has always been closely linked to Dublin
But before that award, Hansard had already been linked to cinema forever. And many got to know him thanks to The Commitments, a film by Alan Parker that premiered in 1991 and was based on the novel by Roddy Doyle. Glen’s role in the film was Outspan Foster, the soul band’s guitarist. A feature film that, without a doubt, changed the musician’s career and also became one of the most remembered Irish musical films.
His connection with the city of Dublin went beyond the stage and for years he participated in Christmas Eve street performances, a solidarity tradition that brought together Irish musicians to raise funds for the homeless.
