Pininfarina and WMC challenges aerodynamics with a huge air duct (and makes more sense than you imagine)

On the occasion of the events carried by the 95th anniversary of Pininfarinthe latter, in collaboration with White Motorcycle Concepts (WMC), have announced the first sketches of a collaboration project based on a Naked style motorcycle that uses the aerodynamic duct as a key element of both its appearance and its structure.

The idea emphasizes that the duct is designed to facilitate a comfortable and conventional driving position, on a motorcycle that creates much less aerodynamic resistance than traditional Naked motorcycles.

When the air passes directly from the front of the motorcycle, below the pilot, and ventilate it above the rear wheel, both the frontal area and the resistance coefficient are reduced without compromising the driving position.

Pininfarina and WMC in the search for maximum aerodynamic efficiency

Recently, we were talking about Vmoto’s assistance to this same event to talk about the concept APD Max, an electric maxi-scooter designed in the pininfarin wind tunnel. Subsequently, this collaboration project between Pininfarina and WMC has been presented. The Transalpina de Design company is committed to maximum aerodynamic efficiency in each and every one of its projects. From this idea the sketches shown in the course of the “design and moving performance” are born.

Robert WhiteExecutive Director of White Motorcycle Concepts, he commented during the presentation talk of his project in collaboration with Pininfarina: “It has been a real pleasure to collaborate with Pininfarina in these first ideas on how our patented duct could be incorporated into a new motorcycle design with a compact hybrid propulsion system of forced induction. I am particularly proud of how we have achieved that the duct is a structural and style characteristic in a fair and naked concept. ”

Concluded: “The concept of the duct has always aimed to improve efficiency regardless of fuel source, but this collaboration has led to the next level showing how the duct can provide functional performance in addition to being an aesthetic feature for future motorcycles.”

In this design, the duct is not only aerodynamic, but also structural. Its tubular shape creates a connection between the management head area, the seat supports and the rear suspension, in addition to providing a mounting element to hang the engine itself.

The propulsion system combines a forced induction combustion engine connected to a hybrid electric power source, which maximizes performance and efficiency. By minimizing the size of the propulsion system, more space for the duct is obtained, manufactured with compound materials, helping to further reduce weight.

It should be remembered that the pininfarin wind tunnel is capable of simulating crossed winds and bursts, as well as a constant air flow, being a key element in the development of the first motorcycle manufactured in series with a full -fledged fairing, the BMW R 100 rs.

That was a great leap in the aerodynamics of production motorcycles when it was launched in 1976, and now Pininfarina is playing a role in another step forward, since it helps create a design around the idea of the central duct of White Motorcycle Concepts.
