Pirelli is one of the greats of the automotive industry, in this case as a tire manufacturer, and is preparing the next step in his challenges. Although decades ago it is as a single supplier of tires in the WSBK, and there are also many years that do the same with the F1, the next challenge facing MotoGP is of high complexity.
And it is not that the F1 or the WSBK is not, it is that several factors come together that will make everything a bit more complex than usual. We are no longer talking about the complexity of developing a MotoGP tire, something that Pirelli can do thanks to technology and experience, but also in expectations.
And it is that MotoGP is a monyonumatic championship for a long time, and the other two giants of the industry such as Bridgestone and Michelin have already left their mark before the Italian origin brand arrives. And the truth is that complicated moments were lived in both cases.
It is true that Bridgestone became the supplier having a set of very competitive tires. So much so that it must be remembered that some pilots such as Valentino Rossi, who used Michelin, went on to opt for the Bridgestone even mid -season, giving rise to unusual situations.
So those previous years served to make the Japanese arrive with everything. But before that there was a lot of development and problems, even a burst starring Shinya Nakano in Mugello in front of everyone and put the hair on end. After that came a stability that lasted time.
For Michelin, things were different, because they returned to the queen category as a single supplier after having renegated that format and after several years outside. Although they were working on the development, when the competition arrived and despite good performance, some problems generated, basically, for the pressures that made the rolling bands emerge.
It was at that time that the pressure control system that we have today began to be implemented and that, as aerodynamics have progressed, it has become vital in terms of management.
Pirelli faces a different future in many ways
Therefore, Pirelli faces everything Bridgestone and Michelin had to do, but reaching motorcycles that nobody has seen or tried. Because we must not lose sight that in 2027 regulations will also be released and, in theory, the aerodynamic load will be less important and the height devices will be prohibited. This, added to the ones that will be less powerful, will make the demand if not less, yes different.
Moreover, in the tests that Pirelli has already carried out with all the factories in Misan Aerodynamics and power refers, in addition to not activating height devices.
In any case, Pirelli’s challenge will be important, since we talk about supplying tires to the most advanced career motorcycles in the world and the best pilots, who will have high expectations and demands in terms of performance and durability that must be solved.
