These days there is a lot of talk about the solar eclipse that will occur in just a few hours and that we will be able to observe in detail from some points in our geography. What experts in the field seem to be unaware of is the concentration of stars that will take place next weekend in WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on the occasion of the celebration of Japanese motorsport in the “Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.”
Laguna Seca will host an “almost astral” event
For the first time in almost two decades, the six living American champions who once participated in the 500cc World Motorcycle Championship will meet on the same track, bringing together an extraordinary generation of Yankee legends of high-level motorcycling on the days August 14 and 15.
Kenny Roberts, Freddie Spencer, Eddie Lawson, Wayne Rainey, Kevin Schwantz and Kenny Roberts Jr.six riders whose names are synonymous with an era of American Grand Prix dominance, will return to Laguna Seca for an exhibition at the controls of their iconic motorcycles alongside legendary racing cars.
For fans, this is a unique opportunity to see those champions together again: meet them, hear the stories behind some of the greatest battles in the motorcycling Olympus, get autographs and ultimately enjoy the experience of seeing six world champions return to the track.
Together, the six pilots conquered 14 of the 23 500cc World Championships between 1978 and 2000representing one of the most dominant eras of any nation or group of riders in the history of Grand Prix motorcycling, including multiple victories at Laguna Seca.
Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in detail
The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion celebration will provide fans with multiple opportunities to see these legends up close, including exhibition laps (at 3:45 pm on Friday and 2:05 pm on Saturday), an autograph session on Saturday from 10:00 to 10:40 am and a lively panel discussion on the paddock stage from 3:15 to 3:55 pm on Saturday.

This meet also marks a milestone for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. For the first time in the event’s 52-year history, motorcycles will play a key role in the celebration, making the gathering of these six champions the centerpiece of this year’s Japanese motorsports theme.
Six stories of six champions
Kenny Roberts
The first American to win the 500cc World Championship, Kenny Roberts changed the sport forever with three consecutive World Championships between 1978 and 1980. A dominant figure in American racing before conquering the world stage, Roberts later founded his own world championship team and mentored Wayne Rainey, who captured three consecutive 500cc titles.
Freddie Spencer
Known as “Fast Freddie”, Freddie Spencer had one of the most memorable seasons in motorcycling history in 1985, becoming the only rider to win the 250cc and 500cc World Championships in the same year. His career included 27 Grand Prix victories and an unforgettable championship rivalry with Kenny Roberts.
Eddie Lawson
Four-time 500cc World Champion Eddie Lawson dominated Grand Prix racing in 1984, 1986, 1988 and 1989. The Californian combined extraordinary consistency and versatility, winning championships in both the AMA Superbike and AMA 250 Grand Prix, as well as victories in the Daytona 200 and Suzuka 8 Hours.
Wayne Rainey
Wayne Rainey won three consecutive 500cc World Championships between 1990 and 1992, and amassed 24 premier class Grand Prix victories. His legendary rivalry with Kevin Schwantz became one of the most iconic stories of the time. Following a career-ending accident in 1993, Rainey continued to influence motorcycling as a team owner and later as co-founder of MotoAmerica.
Kevin Schwantz
Few drivers were as exciting as Kevin Schwantz. The Texan won the 1993 500cc World Championship and 25 premier class Grands Prix, building a reputation for his aggressive and fearless riding style. His intense rivalry with Wayne Rainey captivated fans around the world and helped define one of the most glorious eras of Grand Prix motorcycling.
Kenny Roberts Jr.
In 2000, Kenny Roberts Jr. made history by joining his father as 500cc World Champion, creating the first and only father-son duo to win Premier Class World Championships. His championship with Suzuki ended Honda’s six-year dominance and capped an extraordinary era of American success in Grand Prix racing.
