Yamaha Y-AMT: an automated manual transmission, but with a sporty soul
In case you haven’t located it yet, the Y-AMT system is Yamaha’s proposal to take gear shifting to a new dimension. We are not simply talking about a standard automatic transmission, but rather a system that allows you to choose between a finger-operated manual mode and two fully automatic modes.
In MT mode, the rider changes gears using rocker-type buttons located on the left pineapple, without the need to use the clutch or shift pedal. In AT mode, the motorcycle itself manages the changes automatically, with two programs available: D, softer and designed for calm or urban driving, and D+, with sportier operation and changes at a higher speed.
The key is that Yamaha has not only developed the Y-AMT to make life more comfortable, but also so that the rider can concentrate more on the line, braking, body position and acceleration. The system uses two electric actuators to perform functions traditionally assumed by the left hand and left foot, with a compact assembly weighing only 2.8 kg.
