It has been about a year and a half since BMW Motorrad offered us the latest details regarding the development of its new bmw r20. An ambitious project where the German firm is committed to implementing the largest twin-cylinder boxer-type engine, cooled by air and oil and a displacement of around 2,000 cc, ever mounted on a series production naked model.
BMW R20 2027?: what we know
Behind his long door of the first concept of the model during the celebration of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2024, Markus Flasch, director of BMW Motorrad, to the future BMW R20 as “a mechanical masterpiece with the Big Boxer at its core. An unmistakably BMW Motorrad element”. We then highlighted its exaggerated proportions and a very marked minimalist aesthetic, aspects that make it de facto a unique and unmistakable creation.
Just a few days ago the CEO of BMW Motorrad and what appear to be the first pre-series units of the R20 reappeared in the same image. Up to six examples of the muscular German naked neo retro and a clear message from Flasch in the comments to all those followers of the brand who are eager for the model to finally materialize: “The wait will be worth it…”
Although we do not have official details about what we can expect from the final version of the new BMW R20, we do have the option of detailing those details that a priori seem to be replicated with respect to the first concept. Starting with its front where its forceful totally round LED headlight stands out. Behind it we find a wide flat handlebar and in the middle of it a discreet TFT instrument panel.
There is no doubt that the R20 will have some very strong identifying features. Both the fuel tank with wide and bulbous shapes, as well as the “open” pilot’s seat remain unchanged in this last version shown of the next model. Also the enormous “perolos” that emerge from both sides, culminated with polished steel cylinder heads.
Another element that is still within the standard equipment of this BMW R20 are the radial type wheels although, unlike the concept, they are now not painted completely black. Both the inverted front fork and the double front disc are also included in the general equipment of the model. Likewise, the examples in the image include rearview mirrors, flashing equipment and an exhaust system more in line with what is expected from a production motorcycle.
As a curiosity, five of the six units displayed in the photograph where Flasch is posing, mount Michelin Road 6 tires, while the one in a central position has front rubber with a more sporty pattern. This makes us think that the brand could be testing different dynamic configurations without still being very clear about which one to definitely opt for.
It is very likely that the BMW R20 will end up being officially presented before the end of this year, 2026. However, it is assumed that it will not be until 2027 when the German brand decides to launch it on the market. Likewise, along with this expected novelty, there could be new variants R12 and R18 maintaining the everlasting boxer configuration that fans of the brand like so much.
