The Supermoto concept taken to another level

When one thinks of the Ducati Hypermotard 796Generally, a truly radical motorcycle does not come to mind that could well be the fruit of combining a sports naked with the most radical streetfighter on the market. However, Crazy Garage, a Korean trainer who is very special in his tastes and who we recently told you about, has gone one step further by giving life to an incredible frame destined to surprise anyone on a track.

He already gave us a preview last summer when he showed the world his Yamaha “X-FZ900”, dressed in an incredible eighties track look inspired by the iconic FZ750. Then he used an XSR900 as the basis of the project, combining it with track tires, Ohlins suspensions or a handmade fin made of FRP.

In 2010 Ducati launched its Hypermotard 796 on the market, trying to offer a lighter and more manageable motorcycle than its predecessor, the Hypermotard 1100 of 2007. The work of the renowned former Ducati engineer and designer Pierre Terblanche, creator, among others, of the exotic Supermono, the Hypermotard had, according to MCN testers, “a pathological tendency to wheelies.”

Maybe that’s why Chi-hyun Kimfounder of Crazy Garage, finally opted for this model to build his own track motorcycle. Of course, following his work philosophy, as in previous preparations, in which, as he himself explains: “The concept of the store is mainly to make motorcycles that can be enjoyed on the racing circuit or on curvy roads.”

The idea was to achieve a preparation that would be “at an intermediate point between the less aggressive Monster and the Streetfighter with a superbike engine… and that was designed to circulate on the circuit and compete”as he argues to his Bike Bound colleagues. Among the most relevant works carried out on the Hypermotard 796 we found the installation of Öhlins suspensions, manufacturing of the subframe and the modification of the connection ratio of the rear shock absorber.

On the other hand, a low handlebar was attached and the oil cooler was placed at the front, in front of the front fairing, and a fuel tank from a 1098 was adapted. The handmade rear tail is made of fiberglass, while the keel is carbon, both pieces designed and manufactured with Factory M. A “homemade” 2-1-2 exhaust system was then installed, as well as a Rapid Bike Easy module. The braking kit includes Sunstar discs and Brembo calipers.

Now it was time to put this Hypermotard 796 preparation to the test on the track, as Kim explains: “Towards the end of the build, I formed a team and participated in the 7-hour endurance race that was held in South Korea as part of the testing. And my team finished the race without any problems and won the category.” Truly a unique motorcycle designed by and to enjoy the riding experience.
