Triumph Bonneville T40: the British myth becomes more accessible

Triumph once again demonstrates that tradition and modernity do not have to be at odds. The British firm has just presented the new Bonneville T40 and T40 Black, two motorcycles that bring one of the most recognizable names in the history of motorcycling to a more accessible displacement segment.

According to the brand itself, it is not about simply reducing the dimensions of a larger displacement Bonneville, but about transferring its essence to a platform completely adapted to the needs of today’s motorcyclist. The recipe is as classic as it is recognizable:

teardrop-shaped fuel tank, round headlight, spoked wheels, double rear shock absorber, generously sized fenders and a single-cylinder engine that is completely exposed as an essential part of the design. But beneath that appearance of sixties inspiration hides a technological endowment that would have been unimaginable in a Bonneville of that time.

The new Triumph Bonneville T40 and T40 Black use the latest evolution of the 400 cc Triumph TR Series engine, a liquid-cooled single-cylinder that has received a specific tune-up for these Bonnevilles. The result is 32 HP at 7,000 rpm and 36 Nm of maximum torque at 5,000 rpm, with special attention to power delivery at low and medium speeds. It is precisely there where Triumph seeks to show the character of the motorcycle: an accessible, forceful and easy-to-use response on the road and in the city.

In addition, the engine maintains its own sound personality. The “peashooter” style exhaust not only fulfills an aesthetic function, but also contributes to generating a soundtrack marked by the pulsations characteristic of a single-cylinder. Triumph has also worked on the idle speed to reinforce that calm and slow operation that fits with the Bonneville philosophy.

Both versions are compatible with the A2 license as standard, a fundamental detail to understand the brand’s strategy. Triumph thus intends to expand access to one of its historic names without giving up the elements that have made the Bonneville one of the most recognizable motorcycles on the market.

A Bonneville recognizable at first glance

Visually, the T40 follows the family’s design language to the letter. The teardrop-shaped tank is the dominant element, accompanied by rubber knee protectors and the traditional Triumph emblem. The round headlight, despite its classic appearance, uses LED technology and is integrated into a completely modern light signature.

The set is completed with a front fork with conventional aesthetics, double rear shock absorbers and spoked wheels. In this case, Triumph uses a combination of aluminum rims and steel spokes, measuring 18 inches at the front and 17 at the rear. A solution that contributes both to the classic image and to maintaining agile reactions.

The engine has also been treated as a design element. The machined fins on the cylinder head, the knurled manifold clamp, and the clutch and alternator covers with a brushed aluminum finish provide that feeling of a carefully crafted product that characterizes the Bonneville.

And attention to detail is precisely one of the points in which Triumph wants to make a difference. The T40 will be available in three color combinations: Aegean Blue/Fusion White, Meriden Blue/Tangerine Orange and New England White/Jet Black. In all cases, hand-painted decorative lines are incorporated.

The T40 Black adopts a darker and more sober interpretation. The finish combines Matt Pewter Gray and Matt Phantom Black, with black components, powder-coated engine covers and a blacked-out exhaust. The black rims contrast with the polished steel spokes, maintaining the classic aesthetic but with a more forceful personality.

Here appears one of the great surprises of the new Triumph Bonneville T40 and T40 Black. Triumph has equipped both versions with especially complete electronic equipment for the segment.

The center of the driving position is a four-inch circular TFT screen, integrated within an instrumentation set that maintains the traditional aesthetic. It’s even possible to select a display called “Heritage,” designed to mimic the look of a classic analog watch.

However, the system’s possibilities go far beyond appearance. The display offers phone connectivity, call and music control and navigation via the Triumph Navigation app. The system allows you to view maps, speed limits, points of interest and favorite destinations.

There is also the possibility of pre-planning routes, adding waypoints, importing GPX files and sharing routes with other motorcyclists. All this is controlled from the left handlebar button, while five customizable widgets allow quick access to the most used functions.

Connectivity is completed with a USB-C socket and with multimedia control and calling functions without having to directly manipulate the phone.

But technology is not limited to connectivity. The T40 incorporates five driving modes: pre-configured Road, Rain and Eco, as well as two customizable modes. These modes modify the throttle response and the intervention of the electronic systems.

Additionally, the ABS and traction control feature optimized cornering performance and lean angle sensitivity. A technology that we normally associate with motorcycles of higher categories and that now reaches this new access Bonneville generation.

Speed control is also part of the standard equipment, a particularly interesting solution for tackling long journeys with less fatigue.

Designed so that anyone can enjoy it

The philosophy of the Triumph Bonneville T40 and T40 Black does not end with aesthetics or electronics. Triumph has worked especially on accessibility and ease of driving.

The position is upright and natural, with handlebars and footpegs designed to offer relaxed ergonomics. The one-piece seat maintains the classic ribbed design and offers enough space and padding for rider and passenger.

Standard seat height sits at 790mm, while Triumph will offer an optional low seat that reduces this figure to 770mm. With a curb weight of 191 kg, the T40 is not an ultralight motorcycle, but its dimensions and configuration seek to facilitate low-speed maneuvers and everyday use.

The central stand is also included as standard, providing an interesting practical component for parking, cleaning the motorcycle or carrying out certain maintenance operations.

As for the chassis, the combination of a specific chassis and the light aluminum wheels aims to offer an agile and predictable response. Front braking uses a disc with a two-piston caliper and metal hoses, while the tilt-sensitive ABS adds an important safety margin.

A key piece for Triumph’s strategy

The new Triumph Bonneville T40 and T40 Black do not arrive alone. They are part of a Triumph offensive around medium and low displacements that has already proven to have enormous commercial acceptance.

The British brand claims to have sold more than 60,000 units of its 400 cc models in more than 50 countries, a figure that highlights the importance that this family is acquiring within its catalogue.

With the arrival of the T40, the 400 cc range now includes six models: Speed 400, Scrambler 400 The strategy is clear: offer different interpretations on a platform with a contained displacement, but without giving up the design, personality and level of finishes expected from Triumph.

At the moment, Triumph has not communicated the final price of the new Bonneville T40 and T40 Black. The British brand assures that prices will be announced in early 2027, before the first units arrive at European dealerships during the spring of that same year.

Both will enjoy a four-year factory warranty with no mileage limit and maintenance intervals set every 16,000 kilometers. A range of original accessories will also be available including low and comfort seats, personalization elements and side saddlebags.
