XR300L and XR300 Rally: this is Honda’s new access trails

Honda has taken advantage of an event in India to unveil a whole battery of new features: updates for the ADV 160, the CB500, the CB350S (our well-known GB350S) and the Rebel 300 and 500. But the ones that have captured all the attention have been two light trail bikes with very suggestive names for any European fan: the XR300L and the XR300 Rally.

The reason is obvious. In Europe we have been familiar for years with the CRF300L and the CRF300 Rally, two of the most beloved access trails on the market, with A2 license and competitive DNA inherited from HRC’s CRF450R and CRF450RX. Seeing an “XR300” appear with such a similar approach invites you to think that it is the same motorcycle with another name. It’s not, and the mechanical differences are what really matter.

A different engine, not a simple name change

The most radical Honda CRF300L already exists: Öhlins, SC-Project and harduro DNA

Although Honda has not confirmed official figures for the new Indian mounts, everything indicates that the XR300L and the XR300 Rally share a platform and mechanics with the CB300F that is already sold in India, which would place the power around 25 HP. That is to say: less power, another engine architecture and, predictably, a completely different delivery character from that of the European CRF.

Chassis and equipment: family resemblance, but no carbon copy

Where there are more similarities is in the general approach. Both Indians have 21-inch spoked wheels at the front and 18 at the rear, disconnectable dual-channel ABS and a chassis set-up aimed at off-road use, exactly the philosophy that Honda already applies to the CRF300L with its semi-double steel cradle and aluminum swingarm.

The XR300L is presented as the purest version: light, manageable and designed for both urban asphalt and the weekend dirt track, in line with what the CRF300L already does with its 285 mm of ground clearance and 880 mm of seat height.

The According to Visordown colleagues, the Rally would also add Honda RoadSync connectivity, something that is not confirmed today for the L version.

Will they come to Europe?

XR300L and XR300 Rally: this is Honda's new access trails

Here is the question that really interests readers on this side of the world. For now, Honda has only confirmed the XR300L and XR300 Rally for the Indian market, where they will be manufactured locally. There is no reference to a possible European approval.

And there is a strong reason to think that, if they end up arriving, it will not be in the short term: in Spain we have the aforementioned CRF300L and CRF300 Rally, more powerful and equipped. Introducing a cheaper but mechanically inferior alternative in an already well-covered segment does not seem to be Honda Europe’s priority right now, although it cannot be completely ruled out if the brand decides to play the entry price card in a specific market.
