ZXMoto prepares a rival to the BMW GS: 1,000 cc boxer engine, cardan shaft and AMT transmission

ZXMoto is becoming one of the most interesting Chinese brands today in its own right. Basically, because its founder and alma mater, Zhang Xuehis pulse does not tremble when it comes to developing products as controversial as a twin cylinder boxer engine with certain “reminiscences” in its design of the historical BMW Motorrad mechanics. Especially the one with the famous GS range.

ZXMoto is not the first Chinese brand to design a boxer engine

It sounds almost romantic that, as we approach the year 2027, there are brands in the motorcycle sector interested in exploiting the qualities of a boxer engine. Curiously, all of them (or almost) come from China and are also based on the technical architecture that BMW Motorrad has used in some of its models for decades.

A clear example is CBNMotor, which in the early stages of 2025 and on the occasion of the Beijing International Motorcycle Exhibition, presented an air-cooled twin-cylinder boxer engine with a design almost copied from the classic engines that the German brand once made so fashionable.

Just a few months later it was Benda who surprised everyone with his P51 Concept, a retro-looking 250 cc naked equipped with a motor of this type and hybrid technology. Around the same time, it also extended the boxer technology to a second engine of about 700 cc displacement. and a DOHC configuration for greater smoothness and low noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

Project development and context

It was last year, on the occasion of the Milan Motor Show, when ZXMoto offered the first details about this twin-cylinder boxer engine. So, as reported from Motorrad Online, “It almost went unnoticed in the avalanche of new products…, since the founder and initiator of the company… only briefly showed the boxer engine at the press conference, among the new models for 2026.”.

Practically, a year later, during the presentation of the brand in CIMA 2026it was Zhang Xue himself who unveiled a real prototype of this block. Besides, Everything indicates that it will be next year when it begins to be marketed. in China to later do the same in the rest of the markets where the brand is already operational.

Without a doubt, this novelty within ZXMoto is one of the most relevant in its short but intense history. Let us remember that just a few weeks ago a future “1,000 cc ZXMoto V5” was also confirmed to take on Ducati and BMW. That said, there are not many technical details that have been revealed about this twin-cylinder boxer engine, although there are enough to understand the brand’s intentions at a strategic and commercial level.

ZXMoto boxer engine in detail

With a displacement of around 1,000 cc and a power that most likely exceeds 100 hpthis block comes equipped with a water cooling system, camshafts arranged horizontally and driven by a chain installed on the shaft located behind the cylinders.

Furthermore, the crankshaft “it is arranged longitudinally in the direction of travel, as well as the logical rear drive through axle (cardan shaft)”they conclude from the German media. On the other hand, we have the air intakes that, as is currently the case in BMW mechanics, are arranged at the top.

Likewise, the starter motor is anchored to the front of the block while the water pump and the clutch system do the same in the back, leaving the gearbox itself located right in the lower area. An automatic transmission associated with this engine has even been announced, similar to the one used by BMW in its current range.

The GS China is on the way

There is no longer any doubt in anyone’s mind that ZXMoto will soon have among its model offering a mount with which to replicate the BMW GS range. A model that will not only be similar in terms of philosophy and performance; It will also do so technically with the implementation of this twin-cylinder boxer engine and, most likely, for a price clearly lower than that of German frames.
