The history of CFMOTO did not begin with a complete motorcycle or with one of the daringly designed models that we find in its dealerships today. Its origin is in Zhejiang Chunfeng Power Co., Ltd., the company founded in 1989 by Lai Guoqiang in Hangzhou, China, to produce engines and components for two-wheeled vehicles.
That first business name is not a simple historical detail. Chunfeng means “spring winda” and from that name comes the root “CF” with which the brand is currently identified throughout the world. An identity that must be written in a specific way: CFMOTO, with all its letters together and in capital letters.
During its first years, the company’s activity was fundamentally focused on mechanical development and the construction of a solid industrial base. Throughout the 1990s, one of its main technical objectives was to advance the manufacture of water-cooled four-stroke engines, a more complex technology that required improving both design capabilities and production processes.
The work developed during that stage allowed CFMOTO to reach one of its first major milestones in 1999, when it manufactured its first large-displacement, liquid-cooled engine. This advance represented a turning point for a company, which until then had focused a good part of its activity on mechanical components.

Only one year after that important development, CFMOTO manufactured its first complete motorcycle. The arrival of that model in 2000 marked the beginning of a new stage, since the company stopped being only a manufacturer of engines and components to begin building vehicles under its own identity.
Shortly after, exports to Europe, the United States and Southeast Asia began. Internationalization expanded CFMOTO’s commercial scope and forced the company to progressively adapt its products, its industrial processes and its business structure to markets with different needs and regulations.
At the same time, the brand was extending its activity to other types of vehicles. Motorcycles began to coexist in its catalog with ATV, UTV and ATVs, categories in which CFMOTO gained relevance during the following decade.
This diversification was decisive in building the industrial dimension that the company currently has. Far from depending on a single segment, CFMOTO developed platforms, engines and technical solutions applicable to different modes of transportation, leisure and work.
An industrial structure with international presence
Currently, CFMOTO has the capacity to develop, manufacture and market motorcycles, off-road vehicles, electric vehicles, engines, frames, components, equipment clothing and accessories.
The brand is present in more than 100 countries and regions, works with a network of more than 3,000 distributors and employs more than 10,000 people around the world. Despite this strong international expansion, its headquarters remain located in Hangzhou.
The company’s nerve center occupies a campus of approximately 280,000 square meters. These facilities coordinate the different production, development and engineering areas that maintain an annual capacity of more than 280,000 units, including motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles and electric vehicles.
Productive expansion outside China is also part of the company’s most recent stage. In 2021, the CFMOTO factory in Thailand began operating, while in 2023 an assembly plant located in Mexico was added.
These movements reflect the evolution of a company that no longer conceives its activity solely from a local perspective. The expansion of its industrial network makes it possible to bring production closer to different markets and reinforce a global strategy that covers both manufacturing, marketing and technological development.
Research and development as an engine of growth
One of CFMOTO’s fundamental pillars is its investment in research and development. The company has a team made up of more than 800 engineers, has 879 patents and has four global R&D centers.
These facilities work in areas such as engine design, motorcycle platform development, the evolution of off-road vehicles and the search for new mobility solutions.
CFMOTO’s growth is not explained solely by the increase in production volume. The company has been progressively increasing its technical capacity to access larger displacement segments and products with a higher level of mechanical and electronic complexity.
Throughout its history, alliances with other major international motorcycling brands have also played a relevant role. These agreements have made it possible to strengthen industrial processes, expand technical knowledge and accelerate the development of increasingly ambitious models.
Competition as a technological laboratory
CFMOTO’s entry into the Moto3 World Championship in 2022 represented another important step within this evolution. Since then, the brand has achieved podiums and victories in a particularly demanding category, in which mechanical efficiency, aerodynamics and the use of every detail are decisive.
The competition does not act only as a showcase. It also serves as a learning environment for engineers and technicians, who can work under extreme conditions and transfer some of that knowledge to future production projects.
One of the most spectacular examples of this new technological ambition is the CFMOTO V4 SR-RR, a motorcycle that reflects the extent to which the company has evolved since its first engines manufactured in Hangzhou.
CFMOTO’s journey is, therefore, that of a company that began working from a mechanical base and has built its growth progressively. First came the components, then the own engines, later the complete motorcycles and finally a global structure capable of competing in different segments and markets.
More than three decades after its founding, the company maintains the link with that original name, Chunfeng, but its commercial identity is already perfectly defined. In any market, on any deposit and in each of its projects, the name is written in a single way: CFMOTO.
