The Honda Grom has become the subject of incredible preparations, mainly by replacing its small 125 cc engine with another with a larger displacement. The guys from Steady Garage, our protagonists today, not only manage to exponentially improve the performance of the well-known Japanese model. They also show that, with the right accessories, replacing your mechanics can be a truly simple task.
Steady Garage and its passion for Grom
The components of the Californian preparation workshop Steady Garage They have a real passion for the Honda Grom. Especially for being able to carry out operations like the one they have recently published on their YouTube channel. Specifically, installing a CBR300 engine in the chassis of the small Japanese minibike. The highlight of the matter is not the what itself, but the how.
In fact, in recent years we have known other similar preparations, including that of a Grom equipped with the 250cc engine of a Honda CBR250R. Its creator, Mr. Masato Suzuki, replaced the original engine of a first-generation Grom (JC61) with another CBR250R, increasing power from the original 9.65 HP to 29 HP offered by the 249 cc, 4-valve DOHC single-cylinder.
A seemingly simple preparation…
The issue here is the simplicity (at first glance) that the Steady Garage team claims to apply when carrying out this conversion. The main reason for this is the fact of using a specific brand support. Chimera Engineering. You just have to see the ease with which they uninstall the original engine to later anchor the CBR300 propeller using said accessory.
The mechanics of the latter follow the original structure of supports that the Grom comes with as standard. That is, it is attached by links to the swingarm, the front part of the subframe and the bottom of the chassis itself. After screwing everything well using the multiple pins included in the kit, the guys from Steady Garage carefully hook up the new engine that will now be carried by the Honda Grom selected for the project.
…Although not “for all audiences”
In the description of the video itself, its creators explain: “We were told to keep this project simple, but once we started, we knew we couldn’t take shortcuts, especially for this special client. Who is it for? You’ll have to watch the series to find out! In Episode 1, we took the bike apart and started the heavy lifting.”
They also warn that we are not facing “a complete step-by-step tutorial, but we hope you can get information that will help guide you in a similar direction. This is how projects are done: decisions, trade-offs and doing things right”although who would say it based on how well everything is explained… Right?
After the first episode, just a few days ago Steady Garage returned to the fray with a second installment of the project. There they begin to prepare the engine components and wheels for powder coating, while they continue working on the engine change. Finally, they focus on the design of a personalized exhaust system to adapt it to the engine change, using a Yoshimura RS-5 silencer designed for a CBR600RR!
