The residents of Adelaide, on the warpath against the 2027 MotoGP Australian GP

For months now, one of the issues that has probably most tormented the minds of MotoGP organizers is directly related to the construction of the street circuit in AdelaideAustralia, by 2027.

So much so that doubts about its viability remain on the table. As if this were not enough, since the project was announced, thousands of neighbors have strongly opposed this initiative for various reasons.

MotoGP Adelaide 2027 becoming a topic of national debate

In recent days, protests have intensified by different Adelaide neighborhood associations who are completely against the 2027 Adelaide GP. The main reason for this opposition focuses on the supposed felling of trees that should be carried out in the place where, supposedly, the circuit and other facilities that will host this event in the annual Motorcycle World Championship calendar should be built.

Under the motto “Stop the Chop”, “Stop the logging! Save Adelaide’s parks!”they express their “collective and growing concern about the State Government’s continued legislative takeover of Adelaide parks to allow unprecedented and inappropriate development such as Festival Plaza, North Adelaide Golf Course and MotoGP”as stated in the formal petition presented to the local authorities.

Currently, 43,784 signatures have been collected before the Parliament of South Australia, advocating for the MotoGP not to be held in Adelaide. Apparently this cause has become one of the most important in the history of the place. Its supporters have urged the Australian Prime Minister to stop work on the new circuit, in addition to creating a parliamentary commission to fully investigate the matter.

The MotoGP organization is clear… Or so it seems

While the residents of Adelaide, or at least part of it, demonstrate against MotoGP Adelaide 2027, the World Championship organization seems not to be concerned about it. On the occasion of the celebration of the Silverstone GP, Carmelo Ezpeleta declared that the approved layout of the circuit would be announced “in the coming weeks”. In addition, Sam Shahinthe man who convinced Prime Minister Malinauskas of the value of securing the MotoGP headquarters in Adelaide, told AMCN colleagues:

“There are mountains to climb. It is a journey, kilometer by kilometer. It is as exciting as it is overwhelming at times. Destiny rewards effort, and I have put all my effort into this project. They say that cowards never start, the weak never finish and winners never give up. I know that history will be the judge.”

More than 100 million dollars of investment

Metaphors aside, there are at least disturbing aspects in this whole soap opera about the new MotoGP circuit in Adelaide. For example that Bob Barnardthe person in charge of designing the circuit for the F1 celebration, and tracks such as Phillip Island and Eastern Creek, has recently declared that it is unfeasible to hold a MotoGP race on that same track.

According to Barnard, the idea of holding a sporting event of this type in the city is not so simple and he thinks that only with a disproportionate investment, which he estimates around 100 million dollars, would it be something viable in terms of safety for motorcycles. With this panorama, more than one begins to question the viability of the Adelaide 2027 MotoGP GP.

In fact, as Barnard stated in his recent interview, it would not be the first time in recent years that a new circuit has not arrived. We have several examples in this regard, KymiRing in Finland or Wales in the United Kingdom, which were announced with great fanfare and never hosted a GP. The debate is served.
