The R20 Concept was presented in May 2024 during the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este as a radical interpretation of the roadster concept bmw. Its huge “Big Boxer”, the muscular tank, the single-seater seat and a handmade-looking cycle part outlined a motorcycle halfway between a large naked and a power cruiser.
Two years later, the recipe is still practically intact, but the prototype that appears in the new episode of the series “The Ones Who Ride” is clearly closer to an approved machine that could travel on the road. bmw still officially refers to her as R20 Concept and has not presented the final version. However, the fact that the firm’s own CEO, Markus Flaschappears piloting this evolution in an official video leaves little doubt about the degree of development achieved by the project. The R20 exhaust changes completely
One of the elements that most quickly reveals the evolution towards production is the exhaust system. The original concept resorted to a much more radical solution, with large megaphone-type silencers and a practically exhibition configuration. In the unit that appears now, a suspended and much more compact system can be seen, with a large collector located in the lower part that probably also integrates the catalyst necessary to pass the homologation.
It is an unremarkable change at first glance, but essential to convert a motorcycle conceived as a design exercise into a model capable of meeting production demands. Something similar happens with admission. The spectacular open trumpets that stood out in the R20 Concept They have disappeared.
In its place we find a conventional air box located under the single-seater seat. The change once again points in the same direction: less spectacle and more functionality. The solution allows control of the intake and meets the necessary requirements for a street motorcycle, while keeping the design of the central area quite clean.
It does not seem, therefore, that bmw is trying to preserve all the exotic components of the prototype at any price. The goal seems to be to maintain the image and proportions of the R20but using solutions that make sense in a manufacturing and homologable motorcycle.
The characteristic single-sided swingarm maintains its general design, although with some modifications, while the headlight retains its circular shape with the light element surrounding the central projector. The huge fuel tank, short wheelbase and minimalist rear end also remain.
The general stance continues to convey that image of muscle bike that converted the concepts in one of the most striking proposals of bmw in recent years. In the most recent development units, essential elements for driving on the road have also been observed, such as LED turn signals, mirrors at the ends of the handlebars and a different location for the rear light group and the license plate.
A 2,000 cc boxer
The heart of the R20 continues to be the great protagonist. The concept used an evolution of the Big Boxer of the BMW R 18with a displacement increased to 2,000 cc. The engine of the R 18 It has 1,802 cc, so the engine of the R20 would become one of the largest boxers made by bmw. For now, the house has not confirmed the definitive figures for power, torque, weight or electronic equipment of the future production version.
