BMW M 1000 RR 2027: the new M Motorsport chassis loses 1.3 kg and refines its flexibility

BMW Motorrad has formally unveiled the third generation of the M Motorsport chassis aimed at equipping the BMW M 1000 RR. A design of which we learned the first details last summer while we were explaining the most important characteristics of the future generation of S 1000 RR and which is confirmed to derive directly from the knowledge acquired by the brand in competition.

In practice, the German brand uses digital development methods and highly specialized manufacturing processes with a very clear final objective: that customers benefit from technologies developed and tested under the extreme demands of the track. In this context the new aluminum chassis is lighter and offers a precisely tuned balance between rigidity and flexibility.

New M Motorsport chassis in detail

From model year 2027, the new M Motorsport chassis will be fitted as standard on the BMW M 1000 RR. The chassis is a key component for the performance of the official BMW Motorrad teams, customer competitions around the world and the production BMW M 1000 RR. The knowledge acquired in competition is directly incorporated into the design of the mass production component.

Braking, steering and traction forces are transmitted precisely, while the chassis is designed to promote tire contact on inclines. For customers, this transfer from the world of motorcycling translates into greater precision when entering corners, more direct motorcycle responses and greater confidence in demanding riding situations.

At the same time, technology derived from production offers a high-performance basis for using the BMW M 1000 RR in different competition series and in a wide variety of track conditions. Compared with the previous version, the third generation of the M Motorsport is approximately 1.3 kg lighter. This lower weight favors agile handling and facilitates quick changes of direction.

The thickness of the walls, reduced by up to 30%also allows the rigidity and bending characteristics to be precisely adjusted. When the motorcycle is leaned, the chassis can flex laterally to a defined degree, complementing the suspension by absorbing irregularities in the road surface.

Drivers benefit from more reliable tire contact, better response and more uniform tire wear. Longitudinally, the chassis retains a high level of rigidity, so that braking and traction forces are transmitted precisely and the motorcycle responds predictably even under high loads.

Development and manufacturing

Combining lightweight construction, defined bending behavior and reproducible component quality requires a tightly integrated process chain. To achieve this, BMW Motorrad combines chassis development, simulation and testing in Munich with expertise in light alloy casting in Landshut and expertise in welding, coating and machining in the Berlin motorcycle plant.

The result is a high-performance component ready for series production, created from digital development data. In the BMW Motorrad development department in Munich, the geometry, wall thicknesses and stiffness distribution are designed digitally and then validated through simulations, on test benches and in road tests.

The approved production data forms the basis for the manufacture of the four cast components – the steering head, the left and right side sections, and the rear section – at the BMW Group plant in Landshut. Within the production network, the BMW Group plant in Landshut specializes in lightweight construction and component manufacturing.

There, the four aluminum pieces with complex geometry and thin walls that make up the M Motorsport frame are manufactured by low-pressure casting. The process allows for controlled mold filling and consistent component quality, even with complex geometries.

Components used during the process

In low pressure casting, molten aluminum is introduced into the mold in a controlled manner. This reduces turbulence and air inclusions. Temporary cores of quartz sand create the cavities specified by the design. Even before the tooling is manufactured, a core injection simulation digitally represents the flow behavior, compaction density and curing of the sand-air mixture.

This allows injection nozzles and ventilation ducts to be precisely configured, as well as ensuring process reliability at an early stage. In the cold box process, complex sand cores are produced, cured and precisely placed in the casting mold. After casting, core extraction, machining and exhaustive quality inspection proceed.

X-ray inspection, wall thickness measurements and coordinate measurements verify the internal quality and dimensional accuracy of the components before they are delivered to the BMW Group plant in Berlin for further production.

Final precision finishing

The BMW Group plant in Berlin is the main plant of BMW Motorrad. There, the four cast components are precisely positioned and joined together to form the frame using the TIG welding process. Subsequent cathodic dip coating provides uniform corrosion protection, even inside accessible cavities.

During final milling, functional surfaces and mounting points are machined to their final dimensions. A new coordinate measurement confirms the dimensional accuracy of the complete frame before it is approved for installation on the BMW M 1000 RR.

Frequently asked questions about the new M Motorsport chassis

  1. What makes the new M Motorsport chassis special?: The third generation combines uncompromising lightweight construction with precisely tuned stiffness and flexibility characteristics. It applies the knowledge acquired in international competitions to mass production, together with digital development and highly specialized manufacturing processes.
  2. From when will the new chassis be used?: The new M Motorsport chassis will be fitted as standard on the BMW M 1000 RR from model year 2027.
  3. How much weight has been saved compared to the previous version?: The third generation is about 1.3 kg lighter than the previous version.
  4. What dynamic advantage does tight flexibility provide?: When the motorcycle is leaned, the chassis can flex laterally to a defined degree and complement the suspension in absorbing irregularities in the road surface. This favors tire contact, response and uniform tire wear. Longitudinally, the chassis remains very rigid to precisely transmit braking and traction forces.
  5. How is the high quality of components guaranteed?: The development process is accompanied by simulations, test bench validations and driving tests. In production, core injection simulation, x-ray inspection, wall thickness measurements and coordinate measurements are some of the methods used to ensure process reliability, internal quality and dimensional accuracy.
  6. What functions do the offices in Munich, Landshut and Berlin perform?: Chassis development, digital design, simulation and testing take place in Munich. The BMW Group plant in Landshut produces the four thin-walled aluminum castings using low-pressure casting. At the BMW Group plant in Berlin, components are welded, plated, finished machining and measured before being approved for assembly.
  7. Who benefits from new chassis technology?: New chassis technology provides a high-performance technical basis for BMW Motorrad factory teams and customer racing teams around the world. At the same time, customers of the standard BMW M 1000 RR benefit from a development derived from the world of motorsport.
