There are new developments that attract attention for their design, others for their technology and some that stand out because they offer something different from what we are used to. The new SYM MAXSYM TURBO clearly belongs to the latter group. Presented as a prototype at EICMA 2026, this maxi scooter represents one of the most ambitious bets of the Taiwanese brand, and an interesting twist to a segment in which practicality usually has more prominence than the search for pure performance.
Under the motto “Turbo the Force”, SYM has decided to put all the attention on a mechanism that breaks with the usual solutions of large displacement scooters: a 465 cc parallel twin engine supercharged by turbocharger.
The result is 39 kW (52.3 HP) at 6,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 58.9 Nm at 5,500 rpm. But beyond the figures, what is truly interesting is how that power is delivered. The brand assures that the supercharging system allows increasing the maximum torque by more than 40%, also advancing the speed at which it appears, and expanding the range of revolutions in which a forceful response is available.
With these arguments, the MAXSYM TURBO announces an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 5.7 seconds. A figure that places it in the territory of medium-displacement motorcycles, and that makes it clear that SYM does not want to limit itself to offering a comfortable and fast scooter for traveling, but also a machine capable of transmitting sporty sensations.
A turbo engine with specific technical solutions
The heart of the MAXSYM TURBO is a 465 cc, liquid-cooled parallel twin with eight-valve DOHC timing. The main feature of this mechanism is the incorporation of a compact turbocharger accompanied by a high-efficiency intercooler.
Turbocharging allows for better use of exhaust gases to compress the intake air and increase the amount of oxygen that reaches the cylinders. In this way, the engine can generate more power and torque without having to resort to a considerably higher displacement.
In this case, SYM has especially sought to improve the response at medium speeds, one of the most important aspects when we talk about a vehicle intended for both urban trips and road trips.
The 58.9 Nm available at 5,500 rpm allow us to anticipate good recovery capacity, something especially interesting when overtaking and accelerating from intermediate speeds. In addition, maximum power reaches 6,500 rpm, a regime that allows you to take advantage of the engine’s performance without having to constantly keep it in a high area of the rev counter.
Another important detail is the arrangement of the mechanics. SYM has opted for an architecture similar to that used in a conventional motorcycle, a solution that allows optimizing the distribution of masses between both axles and improving dynamic behavior.
A cycle part at the height of its performance
An engine capable of offering more than 52 HP needs a chassis part prepared to manage that power with guarantees. For this reason, SYM has developed a set that moves away from the simplest configurations found on many conventional scooters.
In the front we find an inverted fork, while at the rear it uses a lateral monoshock with a multi-link system. This configuration seeks to provide greater precision and stability, especially when driving at high speeds or when driving more on winding roads. The braking system consists of two 288 mm front discs and a 275 mm rear disc.
The wheels also play an important role in its behavior. The MAXSYM TURBO mounts tires measuring 120/70-15 at the front and 160/60-15 at the rear, a combination that seeks to balance agility, stability and traction capacity.
The wheelbase reaches 1,543 mm, while the seat height is 790 mm. These are dimensions that point to a vehicle of considerable size, but with a seat height that should facilitate access to a wide variety of users.
Latest generation electronics: ABS Cornering and traction control
If there is another section in which the MAXSYM TURBO wants to stand out, it is technological. SYM has equipped its prototype with electronics typical of higher category motorcycles, with systems designed to both improve safety and increase comfort while traveling.
One of its most important elements is the ride-by-wire electronic throttle, which allows the engine response to be precisely managed and opens the door to a more advanced calibration of its different electronic systems.
Added to this are ABS Cornering and TCS traction control adapted to inclination. Both systems take into account the dynamic conditions of the vehicle to intervene more precisely when braking or loss of grip occurs in the middle of a curve.
The equipment is completed with cruise control and an electrically adjustable windshield, two especially interesting elements when the objective is to make long-distance trips with a higher level of comfort.
In the driving position we find a seven-inch TFT screen that concentrates the main information of the vehicle. In addition, it has integration with the SYM+ application, from which the connectivity possibilities are expanded.
Sporty design and a new interpretation of the maxiscooter
Aesthetically, the MAXSYM TURBO opts for a contemporary and sporty image, with a front with sharp lines and a forward driving position that conveys a greater sensation of dynamism. The front position lights stand out for their stylized design, while the rear adopts a narrower silhouette that culminates in an arrow-shaped LED pilot light.
The set seeks to convey a more aggressive personality than that of a traditional maxi scooter, without giving up the proportions and functionality typical of this category.
Will the SYM MAXSYM TURBO reach production?
This is probably the big question left by his presentation in Milan. At the moment, SYM defines the MAXSYM TURBO as a prototype, so both its final design and its technical specifications and future commercial availability are subject to possible modifications.
