Just a few days ago, the well-known international circus Imperial Royal Circus was experiencing one of its greatest misfortunes in the almost 100 years of history that preceded it. The Chilean acrobat Christian Quezada Vásquez, only 26 years old, died during the performance of the show known as the “Globe of Death.” His two stage partners were also injured in the accident, one of them extremely seriously.
Imperial Royal Circus under investigation
The spectacular accident took place while the Imperial Royal Circus was holding one of its performances in the Italian town of Sant’Anastasia, in the province of Naples. In the images collected by one of the spectators, together before the impact, you can clearly see the dynamics of the acrobatic act in which the three circus specialists participated.
Apparently, one of the motorcycles lost speed inside the sphere with the consequent impact of the companion who was turning right in its wake. Quezada tried to brake from the highest part of the cage to avoid the impact, rushing down violently. The impact was lethal and the paramedics could do nothing upon arrival to try to save his life.
The other pilot in serious condition, a 43-year-old Mexican, remains hospitalized in reserved condition. The third person involved in the accident, a 26-year-old Colombian, was also injured, although his injuries were minor. After the impact, the Imperial Royal Circus organization turned on the lights and ended the performance. The police are now investigating whether the circus complied with all the safety regulations necessary for holding this type of shows.
As detailed in the newspaper Clarín, the mayor of Sant’Anastasia, Domenico Esposito, was shocked and sent his condolences to the families of the three artists. He declared after hearing the news:
“This is a very painful tragedy, almost devastating, I would say. I know there were many children present who witnessed this tragedy.”
