CARFAX has analyzed the fleet of motorcycles in circulation in Spain, which amounts to 3,500,000 unitsand offers significant data on its use and current situation. Since the manufacture of the first motorcycle in history with an internal combustion engine on August 29, 1885 by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, the sector has undergone constant evolution until becoming the means of transport for millions of people around the world.
The first motorcycle, also known as Reitwagen, was the pioneer of models with constant improvements in speed, autonomy or safety to adapt to the needs of the market at each time. CARFAX, the main private provider of vehicle history in Spain and Europe, has analyzed practically all motorcycles in circulation in our country, and from this analysis several conclusions are drawn about the situation of these vehicles in Spain, such as their average age, average mileage, associated risks, preferred models and use by different regions and provinces.

Motorcycles are slightly older than cars, as they have a average age 12 yearsThe Autonomous Community with the highest average age is Galicia, where motorcycles are one year older on average, reaching 13 years. Even taking these figures into account, 55% of motorcycles are 10 years old or more, and only 21% have been registered for less than 3 years.
As for the average mileage, this is clearly lower than the average for vehicles in our country, being a total of 34,000 km of average distance travelled by each motorcycle. The Canary Islands take the cake, with an average mileage of 37,000 km travelled, showing the enormous implementation of these vehicles in the region. Although the use of motorcycles as a means of transport seems safe due to their average age lower than that of cars and their reduced mileage, it is important to bear in mind that 8.5% of them circulate with an associated riskreaching a total of almost 300,000 motorcycles with some inconsistency.
Among the main risks is the mileage manipulation With 2%, the Origin of vehicle rental fleets with 2% and the existence of previous damage or accidents with another 2%. On the other hand, only 48% of the motorcycles have had a single owner. The regions with the highest use of motorcycles are Barcelona, with 17% of the total number of motorcycles in our country; Madrid, with 11%; and Valencia and Malaga, both with 5%. Of all these provinces, it has been recorded that Barcelona is the one with the highest concentration of motorcycles with some type of associated riskFinally, the data from the CARFAX study also provide us with information on the models preferred by users. The most widely used brand is Honda, accounting for 21% of all motorcycles in circulation, followed by Yamaha (16%), Suzuki (8%), Kymco (8%) and Piaggio (8%).
