Yamaha, worried about offering the highest safety standards on their motorcycles, seems to be in the development process of a new motorbag system for motorcycle. That is at least what we deduce in the images that Cycle World has published in Primicia, where we can observe the most relevant aspects of it, in the form of a new patent record by the Japanese brand.
Yamaha airbag system in detail
As the majority of fans of motorcycles will know, in 2007 the very special Honda Gold Wing team for the first time an airbag system for motorcycle, becoming the only model to date to have this type of technology focused on safety. Subsequently, the golden wing itself has continued working in this field, presenting new patents with airbag systems of different conception to which its Grand Tourer currently equips.
We refer to an airbag system for motorcycle that wraps you and protects you even being fired, which we met some details now a year ago. This is mainly characterized by two issues:
- The first is that it has a “W” shape, to be able to embrace the pilot above and below the arms, protecting both the cervical and the sack. For its part, the frontal area of Airbag actuaria in a way similar to the designs we already know.
- The second is that, after the impact, the airbag emerges from its position, and the inflators are sealed alone, hugging our torso as a protective jacket.
In the case of Yamaha, at the end of 2022, we told you how the fingerboard firm faced the challenge of the motorbags for motorcycle. Then the general director of Yamaha’s Technical Research and Development Center, Heiji Maruyama, warned us of how the brand was thinking of developing its own system.
That moment seems to be closer after the last patent record where we can see, where the brand focuses on the acceleration sensors installed on the motorcycle. In this case, a YZF-R1 would be responsible for providing all the information about the motorcycle position to the airbag system switchboard, and would also have the ability to monitor horizontal, lateral and vertical acceleration.
In this patent registry also shows a tricity as “Indian bunny” when it comes to equipping and testing the future airbag system of the Japanese brand. As in her two -wheeled sister, Yamaha’s tricycle would also use these sensors and the information provided by them, with the advantage of having a stability plus on the front train, a very factor to take into account when we talk about aspects related to safety within the motorcycle sector.
