The hydrogen fuel cell This is the technology that has been talked about for years, but unfortunately it has not yet arrived. There are only a couple of manufacturers that have production cars that run on this fuel and the infrastructure has not yet been developed in most countries. However, BMW and Toyota Now they are looking to change this and have signed an alliance that will be key to the development of hydrogen. Germans and Japanese will work together to continue advancing in a very promising technology.
This agreement is not completely new, as both companies have been collaborating since 2011 in some environmental technology issues. Now they are expanding that alliance and setting new goals. In fact, with this announcement comes another very important one. BMW will launch its first hydrogen fuel cell electric car to market in 2028This is the result of joint work with Toyota, although we must not forget that they have been working on the BMW iX5 Hydrogen project for some time, which was in the development phase last year.
The union is very powerful, since Toyota is the largest manufacturer worldwide and BMW is the sales leader among the premium brands. The union in this aspect will allow to reduce costs and to be able to offer cheaper fuel cell vehicles while increasing their demand, which is the long-term goal. Both will jointly develop the fuel cell core technologywhile models from both firms will serve as containers for installing these systems.
While Toyota already has the Mirai and the Hilux FCEV and other models are coming soon, at BMW They already set a date for its first production hydrogen car. They will take the joint fuel cell and it will work with the electrical systems that the brand already has, being a fairly simple operation. However, the agreement goes a step further and includes the Establishment of an infrastructure refuelling stations for this fuel. They will also work to improve the penetration of hydrogen mobility in this early phase and ensure its economic viability.
