Can a Lego car do a lap of Silverstone with a driver?

We have already talked about the LEGO Technic McLaren P1, one of the most coveted toys and one of the most epic collaborations from the block firm with the automotive sector. However, it did not seem enough to them to make a 1:8 scale reproduction, they saw a greater challenge in making it life-size and with the possibility of moving with a pilot inside. So they got to work to create the McLaren P1 LEGO Technic at 1:1 scale and they decided to take it to the legendary Silverstone Circuit so that everything would stay in-house.

For the project they went from the 3,893 pieces that the 1:8 scale toy has to no less than 342,817 pieces from LEGO Technic. In fact, they used 393 different types of elements, including 11 molded specifically for this creation. To do this work, 23 specialists were involved and around 100,000 pieces were accumulated. 8,344 hours of work between development and construction. The result? A LEGO P1 measuring 4,980 mm long, 2,101 mm wide and 1,133 mm high, and weighing 1,220 kg.

In order for it to move, a motor was needed, something that added complexity to the whole. An electric mechanism was designed by adding eight motor packs (to imitate the V8 of the original P1) made up of 96 LEGO Power Function motors. This means that it moves thanks to a total of 768 engines from the brick company. LEGO Technic Function batteries and an electric car battery have also been included to be able to move for longer. It is the first one to have fully functional steering, being able to take curves.

It is also the first of its kind that can complete a lap of a race track. The chosen location was the Silverstone Circuita British track well known by the company of the same origin. And to this equation could not be added another than the pilot Lando NorrisMcLaren’s champion in Formula 1. He was in charge of driving the 1:1 scale LEGO McLaren P1 around the almost 6 kilometres of the track with a special touch so that its construction could hold up. While the 1:8 scale one costs 449.99 euros, this one seems to be priceless.
