If you are around forty years old you will perfectly remember that video game that is about Demolition Derby, and which they called Destruction Derby. It was a game that consisted of destroying your rival’s car while keeping yours in the best possible condition. But these games were inspired by real life and, as we said in the introduction, destruction races, popularly known as Demolition Derby, are as American as hot dogs or the 4th of July.
What we don’t know if you knew is that these races, which have little racing because you don’t have to reach the finish line, also have their version on two wheels. If the idea of doing it with cars is crazy, doing it with motorcycles sounds like wanting to hurt yourself.
We have located different videos in which you can perfectly see the dynamics of the game, which remains exactly the same as that of the cars: ensuring that the rival’s motorcycle cannot continue running.
The Demolition Derby for motorcycles is more strategic, but they also get hot…
And be careful, because in cars the impacts deteriorate them since they can be more violent, but on a motorcycle let’s see who is the enlightened one that hits another person with everything. So instead of those brutal scenes that we see in the car Demolition Derby, we find a much calmer and strategic process.
In any case, the most striking thing we see in these videos, which are all from quite some time ago, is that when it comes to protection and equipment the pilots are doing just enough. A helmet to protect the head and then the rest should be optional. It is clear that this is a game for those who are not afraid of being “on the edge”, perhaps because to participate you already have to be.
It is also striking that these Demolition Derbys are carried out with so many people who experience it in a quite lively way. In fact, on some occasions the pilots get so heated that they come to blows. And what does the public do? Encourage them…
Not to judge anyone, but it seems like you won’t find anyone you meet on the court or in the stands at a library, a play, or a museum unless they give away beer inside.
But, at the end of the day, it’s their customs, they don’t hurt anyone but themselves and they have a good time, so: Ladies and gentlemen, let the Demolition Derby continue!
