Ducati Desmo250 MX: 15,000 rpm of pure adrenaline in “desmo mode”

Ducati writes a new chapter in its history with the launch of the Desmo250 MX. One year after the presentation of the 450 MX, the Borgo Panigale manufacturer continues to expand its off-road range. Furthermore, the Desmo250 MX is born from competition, the terrain in which the Borgo Panigale manufacturer tests solutions that it subsequently transfers to production motorcycles for fans.

Ducati Desmo250 MX engine

The new model from the Italian firm has been developed on the track in the Italian Prestige MX2 Championship by Alessandro Lupino and inherits the strengths of the Desmo450 MX. The heart of the Desmo250 MX is a completely new engine in all its details, designed taking advantage of the experience gained with the Panigale V4 R, Ducati’s most advanced technology, with which the Desmo250 MX shares key dimensions and some of its most innovative solutions.

Fluid dynamics, duct geometry, valve timing and weight have been naturally developed to meet the specific needs of motocross: an engine that pushes in every phase of riding. A balanced torque curve has been worked on throughout the rev range, with agile response at low revs and a rev range that takes advantage of the desmodromic system at all crucial moments: starting, corner exit and acceleration, where every tenth makes the difference.

The desmodromic distribution is Ducati’s technological hallmark. Here it deploys its full potential: titanium intake valves, steel exhaust valves and precise control that allows the engine to be pushed up to 15,000 rpm. A new benchmark in the segment, which allows you to get the most out of each of the gears. Likewise, the engine has a 44 mm Mikuni throttle body.

The exhaust system is completely new, designed to maximize performance and drivability while still complying with international competition noise regulations. Complete the set 5 speed gearbox Developed specifically for the Desmo250 MX, equipped with a QuickShifter upshift system and a hydraulically operated Brembo clutch with a 7-blade disc and a disc spring.

A solution that guarantees precise and progressive acceleration at all times, capable of coping and adapting to the wear and tear typical of this discipline. The result is an engine that allows anyone to express themselves to the maximum and adapt to different driving needs, without limiting the potential demanded by the most experienced pilots.

Cycle part of the Ducati Desmo250 MX

The Desmo250 MX chassis is based on the aluminum perimeter frame and swingarm of the 450. Ducati engineers have meticulously optimized the rigidity to achieve the best riding feel and provide the rider with maximum confidence in all conditions, especially when the 250 unleashes its full potential: under braking and cornering.

These objectives have also been achieved thanks to specific interventions in the suspension. The Showa fork and monoshock have a hydraulic system developed specifically for this model, with the aim of achieving a neutral balance that minimizes load transfer during braking, acceleration and cornering. The result is an intuitive motorcycle, capable of performing at its best on a wide variety of circuits and surfaces.

Handling is improved thanks to the choice of Pirelli Scorpion MX32 tires as standard, which, in addition to offering great grip, guarantee great agility of the motorcycle when changing direction and entering corners, thanks to the 100/90-19 rear tire. The braking system is the same as the 450: a Brembo system with 260 mm Galfer discs at the front and 240 mm at the rear. Power and modulation without compromise, even for those who ride a 250.

Ducati Desmo250 MX Electronics

The Desmo250 MX is equipped with a high-end electronic package, derived directly from that developed for the Desmo450 MX, calibrated and optimized to enhance the characteristics of the 250. Two engine maps, customizable through the X-Link application, allow the level of throttle response to be modified. Ducati Traction Control can be set to three levels of intervention, engine braking to two levels and launch control to three.

This allows each rider to adapt the bike to their riding style, terrain and race conditions. Traction control, in particular, is the most advanced element of the electronic package. Thanks to its experience in MotoGP and Superbike, Ducati has created a true traction control system, the subject of a patent. This system increases rider safety and energy savings while riding, and can help improve lap times.

Unlike the systems currently available in the segment, the Ducati Traction Control (DTC) implemented in the Desmo250 MX calibrates the power reduction based on the actual slip of the rear wheel, thus guaranteeing effective, fast and linear intervention.

Predictive maintenance of the Ducati Desmo250 MX

Thanks to its experience in Superbike and MotoGP, Ducati Corse has developed a specific algorithm that calculates an engine stress index in real time, based on operating parameters and conditions of use. The system then updates maintenance plans based on this information, which can be consulted through the Ducati X-Link application.

Thus, Service and maintenance schedules are adjusted based on usagewith more frequent interventions for professionals or high performance and more spaced out for amateurs, which goes beyond traditional static programs. The maintenance of the Desmo250 MX includes two types of inspection:

  • MID: includes checking the valve clearance, which is carried out after 45 hours, and replacing the piston, which may be necessary at intervals ranging from 45 to 60 hours, depending on the calculated tension.
  • FULL: consists of a complete overhaul of the engine, usually carried out between 90 and 120 hours, depending, once again, on the track conditions and the driver’s driving style.
