The friends of Bike Urious, always expectant of the sale of unusual motorcycles on the internet, have recently echoed this Ducati Monster 900 Cromo from 2001 which is currently advertised on the famous eBay ad portal. Although it has a good general appearance, there is little, if any, additional information offered by the seller of this specific specimen.
Beyond pointing out that it currently has 4,556 miles, the equivalent of just over 7,300 kilometersthe year of registration and the final price asked for it, has not gone into further detail in clarifying the most essential aspects of a motorcycle with almost a quarter of a century of life at the top.
This means that it will likely require extensive maintenance due to having been out of service for quite some time. That’s at least what we sense after observing the low mileage it has.
Ducati Monster 900 Chrome in detail
However, since we are here talking about a Monster 900 Cromo, let us at least put the model in context a little and explain some of its main technical characteristics. Starting because it is not clear how many of these were manufactured between 1998 and 1999? There is not much information about the latter either, since, for example, this copy is from 2001.
It is also possible that its year of manufacture was earlier and it ended up being registered much later, something that in any case should be clarified by the current owner.
Regarding the first unknown, the number of Monster 900 Cromo copies that were manufactured, there are sources that point to a figure around 100 copiesbut it is not something that we have been able to verify. Basically, because, unlike other special Ducati series, this one does not have an identification plate on the seatpost that informs us of the model number we are looking at.
Leaving these two aspects behind (year of manufacture and number of copies), what we do know about the Monster 900 Chrome is that, as its commercial name indicates, it had a completely chrome fuel tank. This was complemented by some of its parts finished in carbon fiber such as the rear tail cover, the rear fender or the side covers. Its trellis-type tubular steel chassis is finished in black.
Technically, the Monster 900 Cromo was equipped with the well-known 904 cc air-cooled L-twin engine that equipped the S variant of the time. This yielded a final power of 73 HP at 7,000 rpm with a declared maximum torque figure of 76 Nm at 6,000 revolutions. In addition, it had an adjustable inverted fork signed by Showa, Ohlins rear monoshock and Brembo braking. The latter was responsible for stopping the 184 kilos dry that the brand declared.
Returning to the copy that is for sale. It is associated with the VIN ZDM1RA4N11B0067590 and is currently located in the city of Villa Park, Illinoisfor a starting price of $5,496, 5,000 euros in exchangequite a bargain if we take into account the motorcycle it is and that we are also talking about a limited series of which there must be very few circulating on the planet.
