The visit of the MXGP to Türkiye leaves two great and important news. On the one hand, there is the success of Jeffrey Herlings, who arrived at the Afyon track with the opportunity to mathematically decide the title. An opportunity that he did not miss and that has led him to win his sixth win.
Furthermore, the Dutchman did not come out to defend, he went on the attack from the first moment and in the first round he took the holeshot to begin to set the pace. Tim Gajser managed to stay relatively close during the early stages, while Romain Febvre, the only one who could still delay the celebration, fought to advance from behind.
But Herlings gave no option, he imposed his pace, began to control the race and ended up taking the victory with more than three and a half seconds difference over Gajser, which was more than enough to seal the title and become World Champion when there were still many points to be distributed in the remainder of the championship.
As we said, it is Jeffrey Herlings’ sixth world title, his third in MXGP and his first since his arrival at Honda HRC. A championship that also comes in a season in which he has recovered his best version after several years marked by injuries. Although the title was already in the bag, the second sleeve did not change the script much either.
Herlings achieved the holeshot again, although this time Tom Vialle became his main pursuer and managed to stay close practically until the end. The Frenchman pushed, but Herlings responded to sign another victory and close the weekend with a new double. With this he now has five perfect Grands Prix and 17 consecutive victories in heats, in addition to raising his record of Grand Prix wins to 123.
Farrés caresses the MX2 title after winning in Türkiye
While Herlings closed the MXGP championship, in MX2 Guillem Farrés took another important step towards a title that is getting closer and closer despite the scare he experienced a few weeks ago. The first race started well for the Spaniard, who managed to take the lead in the first corners after overtaking Simon Längenfelder.
Farrés held on for several laps, although the German ended up regaining the lead on the seventh lap and went on to his first Sunday victory since the Sardinia GP. The Spanish driver crossed the finish line second, an important result especially considering what was happening behind. Sacha Coenen, one of his main rivals for the championship, suffered a heavy fall on one of the fast jumps on the circuit and had to abandon.
Despite the pain, Coenen came out again in the second race and even got the holeshot. But Farrés did not take long to attack and took the lead during the first lap. Shortly after, the Belgian entered the pits and abandoned the race permanently. From then on Farrés had no rival. He opened the gap until he crossed the finish line with more than six seconds ahead and took his sixth victory in a Grand Prix.
The result also allows the Spanish driver to leave Turkey with a 50-point advantage over Camden McLellan, who now occupies second position in the championship after overtaking Coenen. Triumph thus places its two riders at the head of the general standings with only two rounds left to compete. The next MXGP event will take place in China, where Farrés will have the first mathematical opportunity to clinch the MX2 title.
