I bought a used motorcycle. I had an accident because I didn’t change the tires.

Buying a second-hand motorcycle can be a great opportunity, but also a risk if certain key elements are not checked. Among them, tires deserve special attention. It is not enough that they “have a pattern” or are not visibly worn. Rubber ages, deforms and loses grip over time, affecting performance and driving behavior.

So that you can see the importance of tires on a second-hand motorcycle, we are going to tell you a real case that happened to us a couple of weeks ago during a course. A student had a fall with his motorcycle, without consequences but also for no apparent reason. The problem came when analyzing its tires, which were the ones that the motorcycle came with when buying it second-hand. Rubber that is more than five years old, already crystallized, and with a step that caused it to have a loss of grip on wet asphalt.

Therefore, it is important that when buying a used motorcycle, you put on new tires unless the seller has them freshly installed. The reasons are many and varied, and we are going to list them all below:

Why change tires when buying a used motorcycle

1. Time also takes its toll

Even without rolling, the tire compound degrades. After four or five years, the rubber begins to harden, reducing its traction and grip capacity, especially in the wet.

To know its age, just look at the DOT code on the side: the last four digits indicate the week and year of manufacture. A tire that is more than five years old should be replaced, even if the tread remains intact.

2. Little use, a lot of trouble

Motorcycles that have been used little or only for short trips suffer more than it seems. Continuous heating and cooling cycles crystallize the tire and reduce its flexibility. On the contrary, a motorcycle that has been on long journeys maintains the temperature better and preserves the properties of the rubber for longer. Although in this case, they will be more worn in the center and there will be a greater chance of a step appearing, as we will see later.

A “crystalized” tire may look new, but offer dangerously low grip when cornering or braking. You have to look especially at the areas of the drawing that contact the ground, which is where the first cracks appear.

3. Each driver leaves his mark

Another factor to consider is irregular wear. Each motorcyclist has their own driving style, and it shows in the tires. Some use the flanks more, others the center, and there are those who generate small steps or planes by braking or leaning more frequently to one side.

When another driver uses that motorcycle, this non-uniform wear can cause unexpected reactions: sudden falls in curves, vibrations or a feeling of instability that is difficult to predict and that can cause a fall.

4. Invisible damage exists

Hitting curbs, inadequate pressures or prolonged storage also affect the tire. At first glance they may appear perfect, but the internal layers—especially the casing—may have lost strength. A simple pothole could cause a blowout or progressive air loss.

5. Brand new tires, brand new motorcycle

Changing tires when buying a used motorcycle is not an expense, it is an investment in safety and enjoyment. A motorcycle with new tires transmits confidence, precision and control from the first kilometer. In addition, it allows you to choose a model that best suits your driving style and the type of use you will do.

Our expert tire recommendation:

Before you start enjoying your new motorcycle, check pressures, balancing, uniform wear and manufacturing date. And if in doubt, change them. There is no better way to start a new stage on two wheels than with a set of new, safe tires adapted to you.
