It is confirmed: BMW is working on a new mid-range GS

BMW Motorrad It has its sights set on the medium-high displacement trail segment, as confirmed by the latest images of a test concept. Many wonder if, after the launch of the new Norton ADV range, the German firm will take advantage of that same mechanical platform to give life to a member of the GS family. The possibility of the return of the iconic acronym is already sounding strongly “F 650 GS”.

What we know about a future “F 650 GS”

After the launch of the recent BMW F 450 GS 2026, many followers of the brand wondered if the German company would go one step further with this concept to create an intermediate model between this and the current F 800 GS and F 900 GS. A totally natural approach seeing how the competition spends it, especially those companies coming from the Far East.

The multitude of models and variants that they have has forced the “old” brands to have had to draw up a development plan following a similar line of work and evolution. This has in turn led to fruitful commercial agreements where “those over there” are in charge of developing and manufacturing the main mechanical parts, while their European partners do the same in terms of design and style.

In this context we have the relationship between BMW Motorrad and TVS Motor. In turn, Norton Motorcycle, owned by the Indian business group, has benefited from this quid pro quor for the conception of its new Atlas range.

It is precisely at this point where, after seeing the first images of what in the future could end up becoming the return of the acronym “F 650 GS”, international media speculate with the use of this same platform (or at least part of it) to develop the Germans’ new ADV-Trail.

What we can expect

In any case, the new Atlas and Atlas GT feature an improved version of the 420 cm³ inline twin that powers the F 450 GS. The changes focus mainly on an increase in displacement to 585 cc, in addition to including a 270° crankshaft, unlike the one equipped by the German with crankpins displaced 135 degrees and a counter-rotating axle. Changes that significantly reduce vibrations and provide a more emotional and dynamic character to the power delivery.

However, in the future “F 650 GS” it is very likely that the displacement will greatly exceed 600 cc, since it would compete directly with rivals of the stature of the Honda Transalp and the Yamaha Ténéré 700 with 755 and 689 cubic centimeters, respectively. Another thing that is different is the performance aspect where a hypothetical “F 650 GS” would have a power similar to the Norton Atlas, about 70 hp approximatelybeing halfway between the 48 HP of the F 450 GS and the 87 HP of its older sister the F 800 GS.

The details offered by the prototype

Focusing on the images published by the German media Motorrad Magazin, we can see some notable differences compared to the British model. Starting with the chassis, more similar to the one fitted to the F 900 GS than the one used in the British chassis. Something similar happens with the braking equipment, almost certainly the same as its older sister. This is in turn integrated into a pair of radial wheels that, a priori, appear to be 21” at the front and 18” at the rear.

At an aesthetic and equipment level, for example, the front headlight that this supposed “F 650 GS” sports, with a design very similar to that of the R 1300 GS, stands out. The same does not happen with the “duck-bill” type front fender that presides over the front of the everlasting German trail. The prototype in the images has a conventional type installed, although this detail is clearly susceptible to future changes.

For when an “F 650 GS”

After this “discovery” more than one wonders when BMW Motorrad could add a supposed “F 650 GS” to its current adventure range. Honestly, this point is not clear although the development process of the recent F 450 GS serves as a reference. This means that EICMA 2026 will probably be the place chosen by the brand for the official presentation of the first prototype of the model.

A year later, in the same place, the final version would arrive, with 2028 being the right time for its official launch. In any case, all of these are just vague ideas on the subject, since the brand, for the moment, has not commented on the matter, so we have to wait for new updates on the matter… We will be attentive!
