BMW Motorrad refines the final details around the development of the striking R20. The recent leaked images of a test unit driving on German roads confirm how close the model is to production, although, as expected, its final registrationable version will be officially presented a few months before the expected launch.
Everything indicates that EICMA 2026 will be the place chosen by the brand to “pull the blanket” and show us its internal vision of what “the naked with the biggest boxer ever assembled” should be.
BMW R20: what we know
The new images published by Motorrad Online confirm what we already suspected since last May: The BMW R20 is practically ready to go into production. Then Markus Flasch, CEO of the brand, posed next to six examples of the model, also transmitting a clear message: The huge naked with a 2,000 cc boxer engine is already rolling towards production.
This theory is now confirmed with the leak of a good handful of photographs where it is clear and evident that the German brand has its homework done in relation to this matter. So much so that, as confirmed by the colleagues of the German media “significant changes are unlikely to occur before the official presentation of the BMW R20.”
The reason is none other than having all the components necessary for homologation, including the complete lighting equipment, rear-view mirrors, license plate holder or an exhaust system. “with short side pipes on the low rise muffler”as they themselves explain in detail.
BMW R20: the technique that surrounds the whole
Two years after the first details about the development of the R20 were leaked, it is inevitable to think about the similarity that this registrable variant maintains with respect to the concepts initial presented on the occasion of the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2024. On a technical level, what we can confirm is that its enormous Big Boxer engine cooled by air and oil will have a final displacement of approximately 2,000 cc.
Objectively comparing this mechanics with the one currently fitted to the R18, the R20 could offer a maximum torque close to 200 Nm and a final power that far exceeds 100 HP. To achieve this, BMW Motorrad has worked on such important aspects as a completely new exhaust system that, in addition to being able to homologate the model to the current Euro5+, would also fulfill its role in terms of performance.
For this, it has a highly studied technical architecture where it stands out “a large-volume flat collector elegantly hidden under the Big Boxer engine and two short side outlets. And at the top, in front of the prominent front section of the Big Boxer, is a proportionally sized oil radiator”they conclude from the German website.
All this without forgetting a key pillar in the design of the model: its aesthetics. In this section, the brand uses a compilation of elements to highlight the “muscle-retro” style that the R20 enjoys. Single-seat “open-air” seat, mirrors anchored to the tips of the handlebars or a well-crafted rear swing arm are part of this exclusive list.
BMW R20 2028?
Although there is no official confirmation of the exact moment of the official presentation of the new BMW Motorrad R20, everything indicates that it will be next November on the occasion of the well-known Milan Motor Show, when the German firm will show us the final version of the model. However, international media very close to the brand’s management leadership assure that it will not be until the 2028 season when it finally reaches the company’s official dealerships.
