We are left with a peculiar panorama in the motor industry. While a few decades ago they were all independent brands with a very marked personality in each of them, the future of the sector is forcing the opposite. We now live in a time in which large industrial groups predominate, conglomerates that bring together a good number of brands and that manage to save costs by sharing technologies and developments. Now Nissan and Honda negotiate a possible merger to survive.
The two Japanese brands already They had previously collaborated in specific projects. They had joint agreements with Toyota to develop hydrogen fuel cell systems and had also teamed up to work in the demanding Chinese market. Now there is talk of a total merger that could also affect third parties. It could be a very valuable move in the Japanese industry, since both would emerge stronger. There is still no type of confirmation, beyond the conversations they have been having for several months.
On the one hand, it was rumored months ago that Honda was interested in buying a stake in Nissan, something that could lead to that merger. On the other hand, we must take into account membership and origin of both. Honda has less of a problem, since it is independent and integrates Acura. However, Nissan is in an Alliance with Renault and Mitsubishi. If the agreement were to become a reality, they could leave the French firm aside and take Mitsubishi with them to form an even more potent agreement of Japanese blood.
Adding five brands (Honda, Acura, Nissan, Infiniti and Mitsubishi) would form an exemplary conglomerate, only behind Stellantis in terms of number of firms. They could even be a rival to Toyota in several areas, while would continue to save costs and jointly developing the electric vehicle. That would also allow them to be more competitive against Tesla and emerging Chinese brands. Although nothing is confirmed yet, this information has caused Nissan to increase its value considerably on the stock market.
