A KTM 990 SMT is simmering at the Austrian facilities in Mattighofen, where the brand has its headquarters. Alongside this, it also seems that an adventure variant of the model is being shaped, using a common platform but equipped with everything necessary for off-road driving.
In any case, focusing on the latest images published by our colleagues at Motorrad Online, we can see how the supposed 990 SMT would have a general aesthetic quite in keeping with the country variant. However, and taking into account the legendary initials that its commercial name carries, it would come equipped with all the necessary elements to be able to get the most out of it on the road.
KTM 990 SMT: Touring qualities without neglecting fun
In these first images of the test mule of the possible 990 SMT Two factors stand out in particular. On the one hand, the adoption of 17” alloy wheels on both axles, curiously fitted with a Michelin tyre at the front and a Continental tyre at the rear. There is also the enduro look that the 990 Adventure test mule we saw last June showed off.
Also noteworthy is the revised chassis used by the Offroad version, as well as a long-travel suspension system that is equally suitable for road use. In terms of mechanics, we find the engine used by the new KTM 990 Duke. We are talking about the well-known engine 947cc LC8c which also equips the 890 Duke R. If we follow what KTM did with its new 890 SMT, it is very likely that this 990 SMT also came with a somewhat reduced power compared to its naked sister.
Considering that the 990 Duke claims 123 hp of maximum power at 9,500 rpm and 103 Nm of torque at 6,750 rpm, the 990 SMT could fall below the 120 hp threshold. Its touring philosophy (albeit with a spicy touch) would be decisive in making this decision, as was already the case with the current 890 SMT 2024. On the other hand, it is also unclear when KTM could unveil the model.
The Germans say that 2025 seems too early for the arrival of a new generation 990 SMT and its corresponding Adventure version. We will probably have to wait until 2026 for its unveiling, although, with a bit of luck, the brand may give us a taste of it before EICMA 2025.
