LS2 X-Master Suit Test: Introduction to the LS2 X-Master Suit
We often ask ourselves which equipment is most suitable for our needs. In the case of trail/adventure it is especially important, since the very definition of the segment implies the use of the motorcycle in all types of conditions, which can be variable in a short period of time.
Not only that: trips involve long hours on the motorcycle. That requires protection and comfort in equal parts. To this end, the LS2 firm has developed the X-Master line that includes, together or separately, jacket and pants, including in the first case, four color combinations.
The growth of the brand in its relatively short history is astonishing. LS2 Helmets was established in 1990 in China, founded by Arthur Liao with the vision of manufacturing superior quality helmets. Since its inception, the brand has invested in innovative technology, which has allowed it to grow and become a global benchmark in the motorcyclist protection industry.
In 2007, LS2 decided to take a strategic step and open its headquarters in Barcelona, Spain, which allowed it to strengthen its presence in the competitive European market and expand its range in every way. It can be said that LS2 is capable of equipping the rider from head to toe.
To demonstrate this, I was able to attend the presentation of the Yamaha Ténéré 700 World Raid equipped entirely with LS2. To the X-Master suit that we tested here, we must add the X-Force carbon helmet, Adventure boots and Octane gloves. You can see all that equipment in the video that accompanies this article.
LS2 X-Master suit test: Features of the LS2 X-Master suit
The X-Master jacket is characterized by its high-density Ripstop outer fabric, which provides abrasion resistance, as well as an elastic fabric that ensures a high level of comfort. It has a removable thermal lining, allowing it to be used in various weather conditions.
The LS2 SHELTEX® PLUS waterproof membrane, also removable, guarantees 15,000 mm waterproofing and 12,000 g/m2/24h breathability, meaning that riders will stay dry and comfortable even in adverse conditions. It should be noted that the waterproof layer can be placed between the outer fabric and the thermal lining or directly on the garment, which provides extra versatility and simplifies its change in changing environments.
For protection, the jacket incorporates CE (Level 2) shoulder and elbow protectors, as well as an optional back protector (which I recommend in any case). Its clever design includes an internal water drainage system and a waterproof chest pocket, which is ideal for keeping valuables safe.
Another really useful “marsupial” front pocket connected to the left and right and two large high-capacity side pockets are added. The practical, waterproof back pocket allows you to store the waterproof lining for use when necessary. Hydration is also planned through accommodation accommodation provided for camelback.
Additionally, it has large vents on the chest, sleeves and back, promoting excellent air circulation while driving. The adjustment in sleeves and waist allows, beyond the size, its use for all types of physiognomies.
One of the characteristics of the jacket is that the closure is asymmetrical. The closing zipper is located on the left side (the one on the right side is for ventilation) and is called “Ideal”. If you think that because it is not in the center it is more difficult to close, I can tell you that it is precisely the other way around: its magnetic system allows the two parts of the zipper to come together just by approaching them, having only to raise the zipper puller, which has a lock in its highest part. When you close the neck, you can feel the neoprene contour, which is really comfortable and prevents chafing on your neck. A joy.
The pants complement the jacket perfectly, made with the same focus on safety and comfort. Like the jacket, it is built with high quality materials that provide resistance and freedom of movement.
They include CE knee protectors, adjustable in two positions, allowing you to customize the level of protection and comfort. They have multifunctional -and waterproof- cargo pockets, a YKK zipper that allows the pants to be easily attached to the jacket, and a removable waterproof fanny pack that adds versatility to the set.
They also feature an adjustable design at the waist and cuffs, as well as reflective stripes that increase visibility at night, ensuring that the rider is always protected. Ventilation is also exemplary, whether on the front of the thighs, on the sides at hip height, or from the knee down. Together with the same linings as the jacket (thermal and waterproof), it allows its use in all types of cold, hot or humid conditions.
LS2 X-Master suit test: Getting started with the LS2 X-Master suit
I went to the presentation of the Yamaha Ténéré 700 World Raid with complete brand new LS2 equipment, it seemed like the Three Wise Men had just arrived. As it was spring in Sicily and the route ran along both the coast and the mountains, over 200 kilometers I was able to see the virtues of the equipment with cold in the morning, rain halfway through the route and mild temperatures in the afternoon (not intense heat).
Before getting on the bike I took the trouble to fine-tune the Adventure boots to achieve walking comfort and ankle support. I had already tried the suit on at home before traveling. I just had to choose what layers to wear before the day.
Since the forecast was for light rain, I decided not to install the waterproof jacket and pants layers and carry them in the back pocket of the jacket. I also didn’t put the thermal lining in the pants, since the temperatures were going to be around 14-15ºC. Below 10ºC, I would have put the lining in the pants, while the multiple openings guaranteed ventilation if the temperature rose too high. I did keep the lining on the jacket during the morning. In the afternoon, to the backpack.
I have to say that I was completely right: I was neither cold in the morning nor hot in the afternoon; I didn’t have to go to the openings to ventilate either. That said, the most notable thing was the comfort of the set. I alternated the zipper that connects the jacket and pants with the use of suspenders in the afternoon – I have always liked them on motorcycles – both options being very comfortable riding standing on the footpegs in the off-road sections. As the sleeves of the jacket are pre-curved, the position at the controls is extremely natural at all times.
Given the orography of the route, from Madrid I decided to use an off-road helmet such as the X-Force. I wasn’t expecting such a comfortable and light helmet. It is true that it does not have mechanisms, but I have tried other off-road helmets and although it is a matter in which the shape of the head counts, none has adapted better to mine. Its 1,150 grams result in comfort, in the sense that you do not feel inertia, but rather freedom of movement and, incidentally, a wide field of vision. A 10.
Helmet, gloves and boots were a perfect complement to the X-Master suit in a presentation like that of the Yamaha Ténéré 700 World Raid, but it is also perfectly valid for road routes during the four seasons of the year.
