More control and fines for manipulated, false or illegal escapes

The European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (ACEM), and the National Association of Companies of the two -wheeled sector (Anesdor), have received with pleasure the recent update of the Regulation ECE 92.03which introduces new provisions to prevent manipulation of motorcycle replacement exhaust systems.

These measures reinforce the existing regulations with the objective of reducing sound emissions and ensuring that the replacement components comply with the strict European standards of approval.

As we all know, for decades, the European Union regulates the noise level of motorcycles, establishing maximum limits allowed to minimize noise pollution and improve coexistence in urban and rural environments. Through Regulation (EU) 168/2013regulations such as ECE 92which regulates replacement silencers, and ECE 41intended for original escapes.

In 2023, the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers, in collaboration with the International Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (Imma) and actors in the Exhaust after -sales sector, published a set of guidelines backed by European administrations to ensure proper compliance with the sound levels established in homologation.

These guidelines seek to harmonize regulation in all member countries and avoid possible legal gaps that allow the commercialization of non -conforming products.

Antonio PerlotGeneral secretary of ACEMemphasized the importance of this normative evolution and has just declared: “The adoption of the new provisions against manipulation is a fundamental step to ensure that motorcycle replacement exhaust systems comply with current regulations. This advance will strengthen measures to control excessive noise, addressing concerns expressed by citizens and political leaders. ACEM remains committed to harmonized implementation, working hand in hand with the authorities and actors in the sector to promote responsible motorcycling

For its part, José María RiañoGeneral secretary of Anesdorstressed: “The industry has always complied with the regulations of homologation in sound matters. The incorporation of the test cycle ASEPmore demanding, and this recent review of the ECE 92.03 regulations are evidence of our commitment to the reduction of acoustic impact. However, it is essential that administrations reinforce market control to prevent the sale of counterfeit escapes or that they do not comply with the regulations. It is also crucial to sanction those users who, due to poor maintenance or illegal modifications, generate discomfort and harm the image of the motorist collective

The evolution of Regulation ECE 92.03 It has been driven by the noise and tire working group (GRBP), within the World Forum for the Harmonization of Regulations on Vehicles (WP.29), belonging to the Economic Commission for the United Nations Europe (Unnece).

With the approval of this update in September 2024, the mechanisms to prevent manipulations are reinforced and ensure that replacement exhaust systems comply with the same standards as the originals.

The new provisions of Regulation ECE 92.03 They represent a significant step to improve the noise control of motorcycles in Europe, protecting the environment and promoting sustainable mobility.

With the collaboration of the industry, regulatory organizations and motorists, these measures are expected to contribute to a more harmonious coexistence in public space.
