After four long weeks, we begin the second part of the championship with the MotoGP Great Britain 2024. Perhaps the most desired of the championship so far, precisely because he has been a long time coming.
I don’t think anyone can be very happy about the fact that the championship has stopped in its tracks for such a long period. Not even the drivers. But it all depends on how each of them felt after the German Grand Prix, the last one before going on holiday.
There will be riders who have benefited from a reset, such as Jorge Martín, who lost the championship lead right there after crashing while leading the race. A mistake that, hopefully, he has been able to bury and we will have him back with his confidence fully restored.
A similar case could be that of Pedro Acosta, who, having had a spectacular start to the season, has seen in the last few races that he could be entering a downward curve in terms of results and understanding with the bike. So let’s hope that this new start can help him reverse the trend and that we have him battling with those ahead of him again.
For some drivers, this slowdown may break their rhythm of good results.
In Pecco’s case, this seems unlikely, as his perseverance and serenity seem to have never abandoned him. His mental strength has grown to become one of the pillars on which his aspirations for a third consecutive title are based. Although the 10 points that separate him from Jorge Martín are very few, there is still a long way to go in the championship.
Marc Márquez has had a somewhat turbulent first part of the championship, but despite this, he has placed third in the general classification, 46 points behind ‘Martinator’. The complications have been caused by some bad classifications, which forced him to make some spectacular comebacks in the race for the fans, but which he would certainly prefer not to have to do. At least not from the 4th row of the grid.
We’ll see how the break has been for the 93, given that the last week has been quite eventful due to the controversy raised by his performance at the WDW’24 (World Ducati Week) when, in the exhibition race held there, he decided to snatch third place from the Italian Bulega, overtaking him in the last corner. An action that resulted in the superbike rider on the ground with his arms crossed… and the Gresini rider on the podium but also in the eye of the storm. Practically nothing else has been talked about in the last week.
And with this backdrop we head to the Silverstone circuit to kick off the second part of the championship. A tenth round marked by the 75th anniversary of MotoGP and with added intrigue due to the fact that all the teams will be displaying special retro-style liveries to celebrate the occasion.
Something that, if you are nostalgic for the aesthetics of motorcycles, may somewhat alleviate the pain you feel when seeing so many spoilers and aerodynamic appendages attached to motorcycles in their last years of evolution.
What did the 2023 British Grand Prix have in store for us?
If we look at how things went last year on the British circuit, only one of the protagonists mentioned above is repeated. And that is Pecco Bagnaia, who took second place in Sunday’s long race, behind a spectacular Aleìx Espargaró.
The 41 consolidated with his victory a phenomenal weekend for the Aprilia team. A victory that was added to the third place obtained by Maverick Viñales in the sprint. Jorge Martín did not have a great participation that weekend, repeating two sixth places in both races.
And even less so was Marc Márquez finishing eighteenth in the sprint, and crashing on Sunday during the long race. Oh my God! How long ago that seemed! Right?
MotoGP Great Britain 2024: The action is back!
This is our little summary to see where we came from, to reposition ourselves again and to get back into this championship that we missed so much. Something similar to when you don’t remember very well what happened in the episode of your favorite series after a very long break, and you need to redo the context of everything a little.
I hope you are all like us, eager to hit play again and enjoy the races of this second part of the season in which everything is still to be decided. Here we go!
