By a hair, but the passenger car market grew in June 2024. With 103,357 units sold, which represents an increase of 2.2% compared to June 2023. If we analyse the total for the year, now that we have reached its midpoint, there are a total of 535,243 units, which is 5.9% more than in 2023.
Despite the undeniable stagnation, forecasts continue to indicate that the end of 2024 will end up exceeding one million units. Despite everything, there are two worrying data. The first, possibly the most serious, is the decline in sales to individuals. June is traditionally a favorable month for family car renewals before traveling, and this year has not been the case. The growth is due to rental companies, which have improved by 15.4% compared to a year ago. Individuals have fallen by 1.7% and companies have registered 2.3% fewer cars.
The second worrying figure is that of electrified vehicles. In June, sales of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles were 9.9% lower than a year ago, with 10,735 registrations and barely 10.4% of the total market. For the year as a whole, sales have barely increased by 0.6%, with 55,883 units and 10.44% of the total market (in mid-2023 it was 11%).
It is therefore not surprising that the average CO2 emissions of passenger cars sold in June are 117.1 grams of CO2 per kilometre travelled, 0.02% lower than the average emissions of new passenger cars sold in the same month in 2023. For the year as a whole, the average is 117.7 grams of CO2 per kilometre travelled, 0.63% lower.
Manufacturers are concerned that there has not been a pre-holiday sales boost like in other years, although they are still confident of exceeding one million units, “something that has not happened since 2019.” They welcome the extension of the MOVES until the end of the year and hope that this will not paralyze sales of plug-in cars.
For their part, dealers point out that “it is crucial to consider that 48% of citizens are delaying their purchase decision due to the uncertainty they feel. We must do everything possible to reduce this percentage by means of reassuring messages regarding electrified vehicles, but also regarding deadlines and other technologies.” Ganvam is concerned that purchases by individuals and the renewal of corporate fleets do not push the market and that, in order to commit to electrification, “the Administration must support, implement direct aid and undertake a comprehensive tax reform that truly encourages the renewal of the fleet.”
Best-selling brands and models
Toyota, Seat and Volkswagen have been the best-selling brands in Spain in June… and also so far this year. Hyundai and Peugeot are fighting for fourth place in the total.
In terms of models, the Dacia Sandero was once again the best-selling model of the month, ahead of the Seat Arona and Seat Ibiza. The Toyota Corolla is the first C-segment model on the list.
