The Speed Twin 1200 is, without a doubt, one of the flagships of Hinckley’s current offering. A frame that was recently adorned with the special and limited edition Café Racer Edition 2026. Only 800 units of a version inspired by the British café racers of the 60s, and based on the “RS” variant of the model. A tribute to the biker culture of the middle of the last century, which in turn has become the greatest distinctive banner of Triumph’s current Modern Classic range.
Triumph Speed Twin 1200… 2028?
Recently, a test mule of what appears to be the next generation of the Speed Twin 1200 was intercepted in the middle of a dynamic test on European roads. And although the silhouette of the legendary British frame is completely recognizable, it seems that profound changes are coming to its general structure, leaving behind some of the model’s characteristic elements and giving way to new, more current technical solutions.
Currently, the Triumph Speed Twin 1200 is built on a tubular steel chassis and a recognizable aluminum double-arm swingarm. Also a hallmark of the model is the pair of Marzocchi rear shock absorbers equipped with remote preload-adjustable reservoirs. However, based on the images we have of the new prototype, it seems that this technical configuration could disappear in favor of a more evolved cycle part.
Starting with its frame, now a steel perimeter type with the engine in a self-supporting position, similar to the one mounted on the new Trident 800. Something similar happens with the swingarm, redesigned as a result of the replacement of the lateral shock absorbers with one in a central position. Other notable details that this test mule sported are, for example, a pair of asymmetrical design wheels or a braking system signed by Brembo.
Likewise, changes are expected at a structural and ergonomic level. Both the shape of the seat and the driving position could be affected by these technical and equipment changes. On the contrary, what seems unchanged is the well-known 1,200 cc parallel twin-cylinder engine with a 270º opening. Currently, it offers a power of 105 HP at 7,750 rpm.
Its main technological features include 8 valves in the cylinder head, liquid cooling and multipoint electronic injection with electronic throttle, being associated with a 6-speed gearbox. In short, the Speed Twin 1200 “is modernized”, although we do not know if these relevant changes will be well received by the brand’s staunch followers.
Mainly those who are lovers of the most classic models of the British brand. Although the test mule seemed to be quite advanced in terms of technical architecture, aspects as relevant as its final silhouette have yet to be defined. That is why the arrival of a new Speed Twin 1200 is not expected until at least the end of next season, thus considering it a 2028 model.
