Nissan Skyline R32 EV: sweet heresy

The Nissan Skyline family is one of the most respected in the automotive sector. There were several generations of Japanese sports cars that fooled the public thanks to their design, but above all their impeccable dynamic behavior. Now with electrification it seems less and less likely that history will repeat itself, at least with the level of purity that was maintained in the GT-R R35, the last one that came out. Meanwhile, they are venturing into doing things as controversial and discordant as Nissan Skyline R32 EV.

Indeed, it is a fully electric variant of the classic coupe that achieved fame in the 90s. While the key to the legendary R32 was the 2.6-liter inline six-cylinder enginecalled RB26DETT, this version dispenses with it to mount an electric propulsion system. It now consists of two 160 kW motors, one on each axle to achieve all-wheel drive. They combine to achieve the 435 HP and 640 Nm of torquea quite impressive figure.

It leaves behind the 280 HP that the original achieved, so the objective was to match your performance. We must not forget that, in addition to having an increase in power, it also has an increase in weight. They talk about the Nissan Skyline R32 EV being 370 kg heavier than the original and that that power level equaled its torque-to-weight ratio. Part of the blame lies with the battery system, which has been inherited from the Nissan Leaf Nismo RC02 and which occupies a significant space in the rear seats, which were eliminated.

The battery has a 62 kWh capacityalthough the truth is that they have not yet dared to give autonomy data. The key in this specimen has been the setup. They want the all-wheel drive to work as effectively as the original ATTESA E-TS system and a sports suspension kit signed by Nismo has been installed, which has Öhlins shock absorbers. They also couldn’t miss a more capable braking system, with larger discs. In fact, they have had to replace the original 16-inch wheels with 18-inch ones.

For the rest, the Nissan Skyline R32 EV is practically copied from the original in the aesthetic section. On the outside it is dressed in a gray color that makes it go unnoticed and the only palpable change is that under the tank cover is the charging socket. In the cabin the exercise was repeated and an attempt was made to leave the factory. The seats have been changed by some custom Recaros and there are some indicators adapted to new needs. Also a renewed audio system that emits a sound reminiscent of the RB26DETT engine.
